Saturday Oct 6th.

Not sure how I ended up on this cruise. When the Gem itineraries first came out I booked my usual February from NYC cruise. It turned out to be a bargain as prices doubled over time and I even had an OBC. This cruise was not even on the radar. The first Gem cruises from NY were posted for November. I was waiting for the transatlantic in October to NYC.

Things changed an NCL decided to show the Gem off in Europe for a couple of months and delay her arrival in NYC. This cruise and a crossing to Boston were added along with several other Med. Cruises. I had no plans to take any of them. Then the maiden voyage fever with the NCL all-stars started to infect me. The prices dropped and Calmac keep asking why not.  June 15th  booked an aft facing BA. Booked air non stop both ways with FF miles.  June 26th the price dropped again and I got that. July 2nd the price for an AF dropped to $100pp less then a BA. Moved to an aft AF. Sept 5th and AB Penthouse prices drop $2000 pp. So now I find myself with a Penthouse, my original OBC, and leaving tomorrow for 11 days of pure joy.

Lets not forget in the middle of this NCL created an offer I could not refuse with a Solo fare on the Dec 3rd of $549 for an aft  BA. But that is another story for my next blog. The net booked on 3 Gem cruises 2 of which I had not plans to take.

In the middle of all this I joined Banned Camp adding some complexity since I was setting up the Meet and Greet and had private tours booked with others on the darkside. It has all worked out. Those that found their way to CTT will enjoy dinner Monday night in Cagney’s. Reservation for 14 already made as well as dinner for 16 at Teppanaiki on the 14th.  It could have been dinner for 34 but a little difficult for me to include those on the “other” rollcall.

So here I sit starting this blog with my bed covered with clothes and nothing packed. I just need to divide by 2 and load the suitcase. Dog is off to doggie prison, cat has four bowls of food and water, 3 litter boxes,  and my oldest son is confirmed on his flights to join me in Dover.

So it is off to pack, print boarding passes, and finish the bottle of wine I opened.

Stay tuned not sure where this will go but this is a start.

LOL! Ghetto tags!! Those paper things are something else. I had ours laminated and a hole punched in each end. I'll use zip ties to attach them

Somehow, those pets always catch on when we're getting ready to go. Ours attacked me last night for no reason and left two rather painful punctures in one leg.

Limo at 2! Sounds like the only way to go. Bon Voyage!:martini:

Sunday Oct 7th

Or should I say Monday the 8th in any case a very long day – My watch  says 9:30 am and I  having an espresso in the room after a steak for lunch at Cagney’s  and thinking about  cracking open the bar setup. Not sure where to start or if I have the energy to share the stories from the last 18 hours. I  have good, better, bad, and nightmares to share and have not been to muster drill yet.

The bad and the nightmares are people related. So you all want Gem stuff first and then I will share the continuing story of the TA from hell that has been haunting us since the waiting area at the airport in NJ. Those of you who were on the Pearl TA will know who I am talking about.

Flight was fine and we had the middle seat open between us., Half dozen NCL folks to meet us, Coach to the pier fine, Check in aside from the issues with my favorite TA was perfect. We were the first two passengers onboard aside from those that were doing the b2b.

I have already run into many of the folks form the CTT roll call.

As many have reported the Gem is beautiful. The pictures do not do her justice. When you look at the deck plans the ship is a twin of the Pearl. They have made some minor changes that have a large impact.  I am about 100 pictures into the trip and trying to capture things others gave not yet posted. I clearly have not explored the whole ship so I will in this post just talk about Spinnakers. As my son said this is now a place you want to go to even when nothing is going on. They have added dart boards, foosball ($.50),  and a pool table ($1). Plenty of TVs for sports and electronic roulette if you want to donate a little more cash.

And yes Ms. C they even have a change machine.

A couple of other things before I grab a shower. They now have pay per view movies in the rooms $11.95 – 50 plus to choose from. I liked the old espresso machine better. Instead of fresh ground beans the new ones use little plastic cups of pre-ground coffee. Easy and less mess but just not the same.

Christopher is the butler – he was shocked to see me in the same cabin as I had on the Pearl TA. Just a wonderful person and very good butler.

Klaus is Klaus – He saw us at Cagneys and was wonderful in welcoming us home.

I am too stupid at this point to post anymore.

Later

Jim

Is the dartboard a bristle board for real darts or the plastic type for "fake" darts?

Hi Jim      I love reading your blogs.     I like the vicarious cruising, I just wish I was onboard myself.;)

I like playing the electronic roulette in the casino on the Pearl.   Did I understand you right, that the electronic roulette is in Spinakers lounge?

Enjoy your suite:big grin:

A hello to Klaus for me.   Christopher is a great butler.    Tell Christopher hello from the A4 CY guests on the last 9 day Caribbean before the Panama Canal.  The couple who he arranged for us to get some salt and pepper shakers to take home.  :bunny:

Look forward to reading your next blog

Monday Oct 8th – the longest day continued and since we need to turn the clocks ahead one hour tonight tomorrow could be a challenge as well.

Current position somewhere in the English Channel. Tomorrow should be equally as long – wine tasting at 1:30, Margarita tasting at 3:00, and Martini Clinic at 4:00 pm . Throw in the Latitudes party at 1:00 pm and the VIP Cocktail Party at 6:30 and the outlook is hazy.

Tonight was dinner for 16 at Cagney’s, not sure where the other two came from but no problem. We finished up about 15 minutes ago and everyone was smiling. After spending a couple of hours in the Star Bar before dinner hard to see any other outcome this evening. As usual just a great group of cruisers. A couple of thoughts. The new yellow chairs are a bit of a surprise but the good news they are very comfortable.

Toured the spa today and got a pass for the whole cruise tonight. I now have 3 plates of chocolate covered strawberries in the cabin and a whole bunch of letters for gatherings and free dinners. I have to love NCL and especially this staff and crew that have made my time off the best times of my life.

I have been overcome by the number of crew members from the various ship s that remember me from prior cruises. Some from the Dawn, some from the Pearl,  some from the Jewel and all the best in the fleet. How this remarkable people can remember us with 2500 other passengers a week still mystifies me.

44 nationalities of passengers represented onboard about 850 from the states.  60 nationalities for the crew, 52% of which are from the Philippines.

Well I need to head out to Spinnakers for a quick drink. The casino has not yet been good to me. So not good they are already buying me drinks.

First impressions of the Gem are all positive. They are still working out the bugs with this being the first real cruise but the crew is wonderful and they are doing a great job smoothing over the bumps. You should have no concerns booking or cruising on this ship.

Shows are the Gem Production Cast and not  GAR – reviews to follow

Off to Spinnakers need to get myself on ship time and catch up with some crew members that I first meet in 2003.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the on going blog, it is making me look forward to the upcoming TA.

Quick question, you say "Toured the spa today and got a pass for the whole cruise tonight"  Did they give you the pass or did you buy it?   Not being nosy, I am just curious what the pass will cost for the TA.   What ever it is, my Mom and I will purchase it, we love the spa on the Dawn and did not mind paying.  The pics I have seen of the spa are beautiful and I am sure we will enjoy spending quiet time in the spa on the Gem.

Tomorrow sounds like a big drinking day.  I have heard that 8oz of water for each cocktail will help reduce the morning (or later afternoon) headache!.;)

Looking forward to the rest of the virtual cruise and seeing you on the TA.

Best,

Hi Jim,.  If you follow this plan, you will be glad that the bathroom in the AB has so many windows,,,it may be the only view you will get drinking THAT much water!!!

A few questions: Are the pay for view movies available in all cabins?  Is there window seats/seating available in the Crystal Atrium?  Sizewise, how would you equate the casino on the Gem with the Dawn's?  How is the night buffet snack in the casino?   Are there loungers and chairs on the promenade deck?

Needless to say we were happy to hear you arrived on ship safely.  Looking forward to more info and personal observations from you.  Thank you again for taking the time.  Eileen

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your blog. Just some questions:

Do they have the same problems with the stabilizers like on the Pearl from the very first day? We could recognize a markable list of the Gem on the River Ems Passage and on several pictures later on.

What about the soda fountains?
Are they working fine without impart an after taste ?

Do they offer draft beer?
Did they learnt their lesson from the problems with the lines onboard the Pearl?

Have fun,
Petra

Tuesday Oct 9th – now where was I ?

Last time we spoke I was on my way to Spinnakers. That was a bust and a good thing. It was closed and I needed the sleep. Lost another hour last night and this morning was the meet and greet. Wake up call at 9 am – 3 am EDT  !!!. I reset it for 10 am and made it to the meet and greet many did not arrive until  11:30 as the missed the time change. NCL did a great job and the entire leadership team showed up  Captain, Staff Captain, HD, AHD, F&B Director, Bar manager, CD, Concierge, Group Services Manager and about 40 folks from both boards.

Klaus as always nailed it. He told the group stop going home and bitching on the boards. If something is not right call Sean or I  and allow us to fix it. Going home and posting about this nightmare or that problem does not help you or NCL make your cruise the best it can be. Everyone there has the wireless numbers from them. I hope they take advantage of the offer.

The other side – how rude can some people be. The leadership takes the time to welcome us onboard. The Captain is speaking to the group and there is a table full of  darkside members just talking away like nothing was happened.  The Captain even stopped mid comment but they continued on in their own little world.

As Klaus pointed out the ship has been operational for 8 days and this is the real first cruise. Still some things to be worked out but by far the Gem was in the best shap of any of the fleet coming online. Unlike the Pearl when they were still putting in carpet just days before passenger boarded and still pulling cable after all that was complete when the crew came onboard. I really have not run into any real issues so far. No ice in the cabin yesterday but that was fixed in 10 minutes. The ashtray on my balcony has not been emptied yet. Little things that have no impact on my joy – Nobody can steal my joy.

For the record the seas are calm, a bit cloudy, and 70 F.

After the M&G off to lunch in Garden Café – passed on Cagney’s to avoid the TA from hell – I will tell the story later but she did show up again last night as we were waiting for diner at Cagney’s. Lunch was fine and as cool and cloudy as it was the Starboard side of the Great Outdoors was packed. Maybe it was the fact there were ashtrays for those of us banished on NCL. Nice addition flat screened tvs outside to watch sports. Did not each much – a little California roll, some salad etc

I ran into Sean the F&B Director just doing the usual MBWA in the Garden Café. He asked me if I found any problems so far and I could not really point any out. I shared my thoughts on spinnakers and he had his valid concerns. This has always been a place that many went with a good book for peace and quiet and watch the seas go by. We will have to see how adding the “sports” bar environment works for everyone. By the way I forgot to mention there is also a popcorn machine long gone from the Dawn ( Margaret I think they did it just for you) as well as hot pretzel machine

Latitudes party was at 1:30 – the usual event – free drinks and a bottle of champagne for the member with the most cruises. I missed by 2.  Big push on the $250 program which is a great deal - $100 obc and the $250 holds any cruise you take in the next 2.5 years. After  that off to the Bali High Bar (Mile High on the Pearl) All the same staff from the Pearl TA. Like the Great outdoors more flat screened tvs here as well.

That brings me to the moment. I just called Claudio and made reservations for the Bistro tonight after the VIP cocktail party with Calmac and here family. Decided to skip the Martini Clinic after spending 2 hours at Bali High. Chris just dropped off the second tray of snacks for the day. Blackberry working fine and the office continues to ping me.

If you are booked on the Gem – relax it now is the best ship in the fleet with just an outstanding crew.

Dress up or not tonight with the Grand Pacific reserved for those that wish to.

I will try and resize some pictures and post later but don’t count on it

Go thing we are in port tomorrow my liver already needs a break.

A quick look above - unlike the Pearl the Draft soda and beer is up and running with no issues.

The casino like the Pearl is larger then the Dawn with no separate walkway along the port side (with window seats). That space is all casino. All the tables are low with comfortable chairs.

Not sure about window seats in the Atrium - don't recall any but will check.

Is that per person or per cabin? I wonder if that $75 price is an Intro price--I thought it was more expensive than that.

Thanks for the information Jim......so they do listen to me once in awhile.  They've got "Tequila" and popcorn my two favorite things.     I wonder if they will put in some bouncy beds for me if I ask nicely....:big grin:

SG ~ really enjoying your blog.  And, I'm so happy to hear that she's the best in the fleet so far.  We'll definitely sail on her at some point.

Please tell Claudio that the Richards family from his last Dawn sailing say "Hi."

How rude of the dark side folks!!!  But, ya' know, they're in good company.  I won't say any more than that.

Tie one on for me, ok????

Looking forward to your next entry.....

12:30 am 10/10/2007

Speaking of breaks for my liver I just checked my tour tomorrow or should I say later this morning is Wines and Views of Galicia.

Bistro was a treat as always – VIP cocktail party was very relaxed until guess who showed up. I have never felt stalked before but I think that is the case. It is too scary.

Window seats – they are still there next to the slots in the casino and a few off the Atrium on the port side.  Great lounge chairs on the promenade deck I took pictures yesterday. Poolside lounge chairs have thick foam padded cushions that I think is new.

Pay per view and wireless internet in every cabin. The still have the free movie channels as well. Right now one in Spanish, one in German, and one in English.

Well I just hung the breakfast menu outside the door. Time to post this and get some sleep. If anything I  have posted is helpful feel free to repost it as coming form a “reliable” source onboard.

Good night Gang.

Per person - not sure about it being a special.

Good night SG, many thanks!

You're story about the MnG reminded me of our meeting in April.  Some bright light started spouting off about how his booze got confiscated and he wasn't cruising with NCL anymore.  It was so embarassing!:bag:

Thanks, SG! Can't wait to see the pics. Is it really nice--nice enough Ishould request the ceremony be held there? (It isn't necessarily going to be, but might be if requested.) Thanks again and I wish I were there. I'd stalk the stalker. Waiting (im)patiently for the story on that, by the way ...

This is so cool! I just found you from the Cruise Critic thread and had to come over and register and say hello.

I love these "live from the Gem" type of discussions. Between this and the Latitudes "It Girl" campaign for the Gem I received from NCL yesterday, I'm ready to book. ;)

10/10/2007  - 5 pm

Back from my tour listening to my neighbors scream. Sounds like about 10 people on the balcony. “dude, I never drank a hole Fing bottle of Absolute my self before” “dude don’t stand on the fing rail” “If this boats sinking I don’t think I can find the fing lifeboat.”  . That is the sound track as I work on this blog and the ships sails from Vigo. I took a video and the dividers on the balcony are translucent now. They are my shadow puppets. ….LOL  They have to do to dinner at some time.

Back to the day – I can tell you it is very dark here in the morning. Sunrise was around 9 am.  Wake up call at 7:30 hand had to turn on the lights to check my watch. My body still thought it was 1:30 am and it looked like it. Breakfast arrived at 8 am as requested and it was off to Stardust for the expected delay of departure. Off the ship at 9 am and onto the coach.

If you go on a wine tour if you can’t have good wine at least you should have lots of wine. We got lots of wine. Maria was our guide and she was great. Our driver was in need of a map in driving lessons. We started in Vigo and headed to the park with 3 anchors in our bus number 13. The view was great if you could see past the passengers from bus 8, 9, 10, 11. & 12 on other tours that arrived before us. I thought we were in for a very long day in cruise line tour hell.

As it turned out we headed south to a town called Tui. Got our first views of Portugal across the river and the must do in Europe Cathedral tour. I really thought we would be visiting wineries or caves as the call them here but as it turns out we stopped a hotels. The first in Tui for wine and snacks at 11:30 or 5:30 am body time. A couple of well aged 2006 wines or should I  say grape juices and a fine bite sized sandwich of grilled flat bread , peppers, onion, and the nastiest tuna you ever tried to choke down. My first and last bite is behind the tent. They did have mussel shells with bread and bits of mussel. I was able to swallow one of those.

From there it was off the cost and a beautiful ride north and off to the next hotel for lunch and much more 2006 wine. A very good lunch with lots of things I still have no idea what the were. We did have soap as Marie called it with sausage and vegetables. More food then you would ever want including a good steak. By this point in time the marginal wine was starting to taste pretty good. Time for siesta on the bus ride back to the ship.

That brings you up to the moment and the neighbors are down to a modest roar. One guy looking for acid. They just offered a cruise tip – make the crew think you are going to tip a lot extra and you get more. Give them fools a dollar and they are in heaven …

Time for a shower and to start thinking about what to do tonight.

Hi Jim, firstly a big MERCI for taking the time to include us in your cruise

Vigo wine tour does not seem impressive, hopefully Obidos will impress you by the architecture and countryside.

Your neighbors sound like a bunch of hillbillies :help: But they are keeping you entertained. I also don't like an expresso out of a premeasured cup thingie. But better than no expresso. Aren't we spoiled ?:eyeroll:

Enjoy yourself, your liver can get a rest back in NYC. :martini:

7:30

A couple of added thoughts – Just back from the spa. Sitting in thee sauna watching dolphins jump in front of the ship, time in the hydro therapy pool, and a quick nap in the heated tile lounge chairs. I hope the grill marks on my body go away. It is really hard having to break in a new ship but somebody has to do it.

Anyway dinner tonight in La Cucina – went thru there yesterday,  a couple of notes unlike the Pearl the tables are real wood and the tile floor you see in pictures is in fact carpet. It should be a lot quieter. Veal Parm back on the menu . We will see how it is a 9 pm tonight.

One other thing – I have not confirmed it but no duty free onboard. It seems since we don’t ever leave the EU they can not sell Cigs and booze. I will check it out on my way to dinner.

The gang next door finally ran out of gas – all quiet on deck 11. Must be time for us to start the party, now where did I put the bar setup.

OK it is later

Headed out for our 9:30 reservation and stopped by the garden café for a little something to hold us over. Caught by Klaus and Sean in line with a pretzel roll and a few nachos. Pretty embarrassing with all the wonderful options onboard. This ship is running better then many that have been in service fir years.   Dinner was very good at La Cucina after losing a $ 100 at the casino and a couple of martinis at the Star Bar.

Confirmed no duty free as long as the ship stays in the EU. Make sure you stock up in the airport or onboard the plane.

Back to tonight – went bowling after wine all day, martinis at the star bar, and a bottle of wine with dinner I think bowling a 100 is ok ..lol.  You all need to wait for the pics of the new outfits in Bliss. It is in fact a gentleman’s club.

Off to Lisbon in the am with Insidecabin – no idea what we are doing but somehow I think it will include a bar.

You all will still have to wait for the TA from hell story ...:big grin:

10-11-2007 6 pm

Dateline Lisbon Portugal – As I said last night no idea what we were we were going today . What I didn’t know last night was Phil (Insidecabin) had no idea either. But what would a day with me be without a little adventure.

General Travel log info. Really liked Lisbon, great architecture, lots of side walk cafes, and shops, museums, and great vistas everywhere. The beer is cold and the food very good.

Our day – planned to leave the ship at 10 am ships time (9 am Lisbon) . We got off to a late start with a call from Phil that they were running a bit late. No problem as we were in the Garden Café at the time just getting breakfast. One of the things I love about Phil is he can always find a bargain. What the means is the word “Taxi” is not in his vocabulary. Our rough plan head to the “main Square” and catch a bus to the de Castle. Phil said we could walk to the top of the hill and save the bus fare but thought it was a good idea and go wild and spend a little for a bus. That was “the  plan” in all it’s detail. The only other item on the plan was to stop at an ATM for some euros.

We left the pier around 10:45 headed across the foot bridge and waited for the tram or bus. Jumped on the first tram and the adventure was on. To pay for the ride you needed a transportation card or euro coins. We had neither. Free Ride … LOL. The down side Phil decided we had reached are first stop and we got off the tram – 3 stops from where we needed to be, What’s the big deal walk a couple of extra kilometers. Got to out destination and I wish I could remember the names of all these locations but it is not going to happen. It was a perfect home base with trams, trolleys, and buses all hubbing  from there and a tourist information center. We all thougth it might be a good idea to stop in the center get a transportation pass and ask some directions like what bus goes to the Castle. Our guide decided we did not need to. Over the next two hours of walking in circles we would end up back there 3 times…LOL

We headed thru the arch and into a great shopping area. Sidewalk art, cafes, street performers and it lead to a tower with like the oldest elevator in Lisbon. 2 euros and up to the top. Well not exactly the top. After you get off just two more flights of a narrow shaky  metal spiral  staircase. Great views of the city and we could see our destination in the distance high atop a hill. Once my hands stopped shaking after the staircase I did great some good pictures.

I was able to stop at several ATMs along the way all on the same network regardless of bank and not would accept my card which I have used in 10 other countries and my bank had my itinerary.

We did venture behind the tower to what was called The Museum of Architecture – what it looked like to me was a church with no roof. I cost money to get in so we skipped it. We then wandered to another square. There we spotted another information both. The line was long and leadership decided to march on and head bck to the square we started from and catch the bus.  (for the record the correct bus #37 only stopped by the second information both.).

Upon are return to the square and no sign of  a ticket booth. I headed off to the tourist office to break man rule #1 and ask for directions. Waiting in line, finally my chance, do you sell transportation passes, answer, NO. Second question where can I get one, answer, Post Office ( now why didn’t we think to go to the post office to get bus tickets, how stupid are we.) Third question where is the nearest post office, answer, next door. Thank you.

Lisbon Post Office a marvel in efficiency. We enter 10 lines all empty and staffed with smiling agents ready to help. We are the only people in the post office – bright and modern. I walk up to the first woman “can I get for transportation passes” answer you get ticket from machine at the door. Too cool finally what I was expecting an automated machine you put a credit card in and out comes passes. Not so fast that would make it too easy.

We find this machine, no language options, with 4 buttons and no where to put in cash or a credit card. We push each button several times and out comes little paper tickets with letters and numbers. Looking around we realized that  code matched the code over each of the agents. I selected the pieced of paper the matched the woman I just spoke too and walked back to visit her again. Can I buy transportation passes? Answer, Yes, Eureka

Ok passes in hand 3.50 euros for an all day pass ( we spent 2 euros for the elevator that would have been included but I did lose my quilt from the “Free” tram ride ) One last question what is the best way to get to the Castle? Did you all forget that is where we were headed for and it is now 1:30. “take the #18 trolley” As it turns out almost tragic advice .

I think some of you might be able to guess what happens next if you have been here. Walked thru the arch again and back over several of the same blocks we had covered twice before and found the stop for the #18 with a long line waiting. The trolley came and we just about the last to squeeze on. At the last minute a small kid, teenage boy, and older man push their way on. The old man reaches over my shoulder to swipe his pass leaning on me. I feel a hand in my front pocket and turn around as my wallet from my front pocket hits the floor.  I grabbed my wallet and started in on the ahole. You’re a fing pick pocket, hey everyone this ahole is a pick pocket. Meanwhile the two little pieces of crap are working there way to the back of the car with there hands in everyone’s pockets and purses. Someone yells it is not the old guy I just caught the kid with his hand in my pocket. All this is going on and the driver does nothing except let the thieves off at the next stop. As it turns out all any of us lost was one hard earned transportation pass. When we got off the trolley we hung around the stop a while and I watch the gang of three meet  in a café across the street. I stood on this overlook and yelled to everyone in the area. Watch out for those three they are picket pockets. Everyone on the street stopped and the three ran off into the city. Side note, all my cash, credit cards, and passport were safely tucked away in a pouch under my shirt hanging from my neck.

We were not alone – I saw several passengers trying to get back onboard the ship with no sail and sign cards – gone with the rest of the contents of their wallet.

Yes we did get to the Castle, great views of the city and the ship, best view was sitting in the tub in men’s relaxation area at the spa looking out the front windows of the ship at the Castle when we got back.

Shoreguy:    I love reading your blogs.    My DH and I did the  first med. trip on the Jewel and reading your blogs have brought back some wonderful memories.

Not great memories of Lisbon though.    We took a NCL shore excursion to the Castle.   The castle was nice with some great art, but not nearly as impressive as other castles thoughout Europe.      We encountered the pick pockets right as we walked across the bridge.    We also have nothing in our pockets,  all around our necks.       Did you notice all of the huge jelly fish as you sailed out from Lisbon?  Scary

Jim I was doubled over reading your blog. I could just imagine where you were going in circles and coming back to the starting point. HThe main downtown square is ROSSIO. Hope the food and cold beer smoothed out your impressions.

So sorry about the ..... pickpockets, you were too lenient on them.:flamin:

I will have to personally show you Lisbon and Portugal to make amends.

I really did not have a chance to complete the story as time was running out and I needed to get cleaned up and off to Orchid Garden for dinner.

The remarkable think as we walked thru Lisbon great looking food everywhere. Great looking breads, cheeses, seafood and some not so great looking like giant piles of slted fish..lol. Just walking around and looking made you hungry but more on that later.

After we ran the thieves off we walked the rest of the way up the hill to the Castle. Unlike 3 years ago when he was last there and it was free Phil was shocked to find they wanted 5 euros to get in . Another wise financial decision they elected to head to a café for beer as my son and I toured the castle.

It offer so great photo ops and more staircases to the top I did not enjoy. Anyone realize I hate heights. We fished up the tour and met at the café for a really cold beer in a froasted mug watching the others enjoy some great looking sandwiches, cheese and bread. By then however it was time to head back to the ship. Not sure how long it would take this gang that can not travel straight to get back keeping in mind it took us 4 hours to get to the castle. Outside the entrance sat a #37 bus the one we need in the first place.down the hill across the square and onto the tram. We were on our way back. First stop the main square and a mob gets on and I watch as a man stands by the door tapping and reaching into his pockets. Another victim. His wallet was gone, ship pass, credit cards, and cash. I had great empathy for him. To make a long adventure short from Castle to Ship the total travel time was 45 minutes. A bit better.

Back to food – you may have noticed we had NONE. Even the giant jelly fish (yes they are still there) in the harbor looked good enough to eat. We settle for a cooked to order steak sandwich on French bread at Bali Hai with several adult beverages after a very long day.

As someone posted and Claudio said when he stopped by at dinner. It is days like this that make travel memorable and as it turns out really a good day. This story like the blizzard cruise will be one that that lives and grows over the years.

Dinner was very good and ok. We tried one of every appetizer and with the exception spring rolls great . Entrees a bit bland but made so everyone can eat them. Service was for the first time a little spotty. The staff was wonderful and warm but kept forgetting the rest of our appetizers so we spent and hour getting thru them all. Overall on balance a nice dinner experience.

The show tonight was Romano Frediani. Those who have seen him before know about his high energy gravity defying act. A very good show.

They did have local folk performers onboard late this afternoon. I did not see them.

Casino continues to be less the nice.

Generally the music onboard a little too mellow for me. Modal Magic is good as usual.

Ok that should get everyone up to date – It is 2:30 am and I am off to see some apes in the morning

What an aventure is an understatement.  I am going to velcro my husband's pockets so those darn pickpockets can't get anything.  While we travel a fair amount and think we're aware of what goes on, we've had close calls with the fast hands of thieves.  I have lost count of the number of women's handbags that are open - might as well stick a sign on it saying "take what you want."  Ditto for guys with wallets in their back pockets, although it isn't safe in your front either.

Anyway, I've enjoyed reading the blogs, keep them coming.

First thing I did this morning (after having Joe follow me to the gas station since I was so out of gas I was afraid to try it alone), was grab some coffee and turn on my computer to read your latest adventure. Lisbon sounds like a true adventure. All of the tri-state area is proud of their brother Jim's dressing down of the wankers. Way to go Jersey boy.

Great job as usual with the log!!

I was interested in what entertainment is on board;  I'm assuming Modal Magic is there for the long haul, but would guess Frediani may not be long term.  We saw him on the Majesty two years ago, and he was amazing.  Noting your always busy schedule, it would be helpful if you noted some of the other entertainers from the Daily FreeStyle, and very much appreciated.

Thanks, and keep up the good work while we await more details on the TA story!!

Hi Shoreguy, from Phil and Anne in the UK (and from the Jewel Transatlantic group).  Really enjoying your stories - keep the ship shiney and the crew happy, we'll be onboard on 21st November.

Perhaps you could suggest that NCL alert future passengers to risks in Lisbon.

I think the blog should be made into a movie, but who would play the lead?  Is Harrison Ford available?

1 am 10/13/2007

OMG – finally two sea days in row- I need a break. Now where were we? Did you miss me? It is about 1 am and back from the casino and 3 hour dinner in Cagney’s. Casino continues to be very bad and Cagney’s very good.

The important things first. At least important to some folks. In addition to the hand scooped hard ice cream in the Garden Café there is a soft serve machine in the Great Outdoors.

So what did I learn today in school. The rock of Gibraltar is hollow with 30 miles of roads inside built in WW2. Apes scare the crap out of you when the jump on your head. Spaniards are really Arabs. And finally Gibraltar is the 5th largest fuel station in the world.

Just backing up  a day to Lisbon. One thing I forgot to mention it only to a half of block before the first offer of smoking material. That offer was repeated throughout our walking tour. Apparently my neighbors did not say no to drugs. The sweet smell has been rolling in here in the afternoon. The good news things are a lot more peaceful except for the coughing.

Meanwhile back to the rock we took an NCL tour. Cable car to the top of the rock, on to St Michael’s Cave, and finally the siege tunnel. Top of the rock the apes were everywhere living in the “nature preserve” or should I say hanging out by any location the tourists might stop and dare open anything that even looked like food. They warned everyone but some people just don’t listen.  Watched a woman walk out of the gift shop at the top while enjoying her Mar’s Bar. An ape leapt from the roof onto here shoulders, wrestled that candy bar away from her and leapt away to enjoy the spoils while the woman screamed in complete fear.  I was taking a picture of one ape on a rail and decided he would rather be on the rail behind me. He used my head for a vault to get there. These type of events were repeated over and over.

From there to the caves that as usual man had destroyed but in this case perhaps for a good reason in fear of an invasion by Hitler ( no not that Hitler) in the 40s. I won’t spoil the surprise for those that get a chance to tour the caves. Remarkable story behind the siege tunnel and the men who built it working 7x24 on a ration of 500 calories a day. In general a very good history lesson today and our guide could not have been better.

In the 40’s to protect the Med entrance a major project envisioned by Churchill and carried out by Canadian engineers created a fort inside the rock with 30+ miles of road and capable of housing 30,000 troops was constructed.

Enough education for one blog. Back to the ship. There were three in port today. The Aurora, Ocean Majesty, and the Gem. The Ocean Majesty made the NCL Crown look big and modern and the subject of today’s thought of the day.  Once again upon our return to the ship you find me in the tub in the men’s relaxation area of the spa. The only ones there. Looking out the windows at the Ocean Majesty remembering all the happy folks onboard waving to use as we left port and then looking around at the massive spa we had to ourselves I began to wonder what do we really need on a ship to be happy. All those posts from folks bitching about how small their balcony cabin was or the fact there was a spot on the carpet and then  I looked out across the water and watched a tired ship full of happy people. We all need to get our expectations in line and not let anything steal our joy.

Talk bout stealing joy – I had to download my mail from work last night – 37 MBs over an hour – all because 2 idiots insisted on sending be 3 attachments all of which was over 6 mbs each. I never even had to look at them. Wait until I get back.

Back to joy – Dinner tonight with Calmac and her family was wonderful. Totally relaxed, great company, and good food and service. I had the prime rib for the first time at Cagneys and it was tender and cooked to order. It was fun to watch Calmac’s 12 yo son  enjoy surf and turf. The two bottles of wine did in fact have a positive impact on our joy but did not help in the casino after dinner.

The weather remains perfect and I did pack too many warm clothes and not enough for the upper 70s and warm sun we have had everyday and should have for at least the next 3 days.

Klaus report as always he is everywhere. I have not had a meal that he and the the whole gang did not make an appearance. I think there are as expected things that are still being worked out behind the curtains but those challenges have been transparent to me with few exceptions. The key as in all things in life if something is not to your liking raise your hand but unlike many other things in life they are taken care of here onboard the Gem.

Later

Ok, now you're just making stories up to make us jealous! I'm not sure which I like more, the pickpockets or the apes - being an animal lover I think I'll go with the apes.

In any case - I have to say you should write sitcom scripts as your stories are better than anything on TV!

Can't wait to hear more:bouncy:

Good morning – it is the weekend but onboard the Gem everyday is like Christmas.

Since it is a sea day I thought I would take a little time and post some random pieces of info – no real story to tell “yet” today.

I will resize some pictures today and add them to the blog – any requests?

Neighbors remain medicated and from the smell of things it now starts early in the morning.

For the animal lovers – there is a huge concentration of Dolphins on the west side of Gibraltar. 100s junping in the wake of the Gem for almost and hours as we sailed away.

Tom for you anything – I am not the showguy but I can share the following.

Appearing poolside on another NCL ship -  the Caribbean sounds of Rhythm Explosion

Bar Central nightly – The pop blues and guitar of Kim Doolittle at Maltings and Stacy Ward Mcadams or Julio Urbina on the very mellow piano by the Bistro

The Atrium has had several different performers – The Gem jazz trio, tonight Latin guitar by Pablo De Luuca,.

Nobody at ther Star Bar.

Tonight’s show in Stardust – “Get Down Tonight”  -Music of the 70s – Soul Train,Stones, KC and the Sunshine Band, Abba, Earth wind and Fire- loaded with music, memories of tv shows and dance.

Tips for the Garden Café – with no trays they have made things easier. Every table has a metal basket with condiments and place settings rolled up in a napkin. They seem to be doing a good job restocking the setups as I have yet to see and empty basket.  A few less things to juggle

Claudio just called – no need to make dinner reservations tonight. I have to go eat with the Captain in Teppanyaki at 7:30 and we are back there tomorrow night at 7:30 with the CTT cruisers. It is a very tough life onboard the Gem but I am up to the challenge.

Great blog shoreguy. Can't wait now for my upcoming cruise on Gem. I had to laugh about your description of the Elevador de Santa Justa. I was ok(ish) when going up the final spiral staircase, but realised that I would have to come down it again which I found hellish. I mean I really paniced and decided that the only alternative to getting down again would be winching off by helicopter, which I calculated would be even worse! When finally on terra firma I had to go to the nearest bar and have two very large brandies in quick succession. Note to self-"do NOT try rock climbing wall whilst on cruise"

Again, I would like to thank you for the time you share with us.  I happen to love the history of the places you have been.  Found the stories of the apes to be amazing.  I would have been the lady with the candy bar.  Always eating at the wrong time.  The pictures are great.  Love the lounge chairs on the promenade deck.  Wish they would add them to the Dawn. It looks so welcoming.

As for pickpockets, we also wrestled with a few in Dublin on vacation a few years ago.  In Dublin, there were signs on the street and stores, "beware of the pickpockets".  No joke. Usually young women who would approach men by aiming for the genitals, while another aimed for the pocket.  What a way to get your attention!!!  What do you cover first?

Keep up the good work,  I seem to have a new habit of eating dinner in front of the computer with you each evening.  The family is at the table trying to figure where I go every night!

One major improvement – the little sofa in the ABs is no longer hard as a rock but instead a fairly comfortable foam pillow top – thumbs up. In general as bold as the furniture looks it is all far more comfortable then the Jewel and one step more so then the Pearl. The chairs in Cagney’s in bright yellow were comfortable through out even our 3 hour dinner last night, passengers with books sleeping all over the ship in giant chairs, beds, and sofas.

I will continue this post later – off to Spinnakers to get a p-chair picture and then dinner at Teppanyaaki.

Ok back from the night out on the Gem and it is only a little after 2 am. Dinner as expected was exceptional and p-chair pictures taken. I do have some interesting pictures to resize and post tomorrow from Bliss.

The Atrium was rocking tonight with world cup rugby semi finals and England winning on the giant screen.

Want to see a waitress sweat just have her forget to bring the Captain his soup…..LOL

The casino finally turned positive.

The seas remain calm.

A little rain today to clear the chair hogs.

Remarkable how many $25 pool towels passengers left behind. Somehow I think they are in for a surprise.

Remarkable how adventure free a sea day can be and that is a good thing.

Time for a little sleep. One of these days I will make breakfast at Cagney’s but not if I keep blogging at 2:30 am.

Claudio just called – no need to make dinner reservations tonight. I have to go eat with the Captain in Teppanyaki at 7:30 and we are back there tomorrow night at 7:30 with the CTT cruisers. It is a very tough life onboard the Gem but I am up to the challenge.

I would like the oldies.

10/14/07

So anyway in the beginning there was the never told story of the TA from hell and lunch at Cagney’s just reminded me I never told it. I had not been to Cagney’s for lunch since embarkation for exactly this reason. 6 passengers in the restaurant and who should appear and request the table right next to us – TafH.

Lets go back about 11 months to the beginning of the story and my first encounter with TAfH. The Pearl TA a great group from a very active roll call – The Mad Mariners. Barb had set up Dinners for the group and I had set up a bowling tournament. Circling the group was the TAfH working hard to join in. Who are you people, how to I get to dinner, how do I get in the bowling tournament everyone said you have to talk to shoreguy.  Several times a day I got messages from others that she wanted to meet with me. It seems (now here is a real joke) that with her incessant questions and in ability to listen TAfH was under the impression I owned Cruise Critic. Once she found me it was like being haunted. I even stopped going to Cagney’s since it became a game of 20 questions every meal. Off the ship and that was over or so I thought.

Fast forward, Dateline Newark NJ, 10/07/07, 6 pm. Standing to the side of the pack waiting to board the flight to Gatwick the crowd parts and from it emerges the TAfH making a beeline toward us. I know you, do you have a group onboard, what nights are you having dinners, how much did you pay, what cabin are you in, is Klaus onboard…40 questions later I exhaled. As expected she used the move over to see me as path to cut in the front of the line. A pattern that would continue.

8 hours later everyone waiting in Gatwick for NCL to start boarding the coaches. I was standing at the front of the line when the announced they were going to start loading the first coach. I started to move forward and follow the NCL rep out the door. Out of the corner of my left eye I sensed rapid motion and danger. In a flash jumping to the front of the line the dreaded TAfH and her two sidekicks. They go to the coach left they baggage on the carts blocking everyone else and boarded. Once the driver moved them and loaded their bags the rest of us handed off out bags and boarded the bus.

Anyone want to guess where they were sitting – not sure you can get exactly right.

Answer – the front row and the second row – you got it one in each pair of seats sitting on the aisle protecting their territory like a pack of wolves. All we could do was laugh at this point.

2 hours later (10:30am)  we at  the pier in Dover and the ship is not yet ready to board. The Latitudes and VIP area is being used for a meeting. I ran into Colleen the GSC from the Pearl and she told me to sit off to the side and they would come get us when the other area was clear. We sat there and watched the TAfH make several bull rushes to get into the other area but the pier team defended the area well. I was not sure how long they could hold out against this formidable foe.

The way Dover is set up there is a large waiting area with check in stations, double doors that lead to security and the VIP/Latitudes area on the left. They came and found us and was escorted into the VIP area. I was in line first. Now how long do you think that would last. They have a small holding area to Penthouse passengers to sit AFTER check in. They were not checking passengers in yet so we were standing in line all by ourselves and who comes along – nope not the TAfH, fooled you…LOL – none other then Claudio, “Doctor, how nice to see you, not quite ready but please come back here and have a seat for a few minutes”  I  sat down in the first seat by the entrance so it would be easy to check in when they were ready and set my carryon at my feet. I got up to talk to Claudio and Iheard this grating noise, the earth shook, the divider separating the area parted and the TAfH entered the area.  After a heated discussion with Claudio he was overcome by the force and he let her stay. I turned around and who was in my seat. Did you expect anything else..lol Best of all she has her feet on my bag.

I have to get this part exact since it is perhaps the funniest exchange. I walked over and said “Excuse me that is my bag” Answer. “ Oh that’s ok it does not bother me you can leave it here”  At that point they were ready to check VIP passengers in and as we all knew would be the case the TAfH jumped to her feet and was as always first in line. At this point my son and I can no longer keep a straight face. It was like a Monty Python movie and we were doubled over in laughter. I even took a picture of them checking in just to make sure it was not a dream.

We checked in , I rescued my bag , and took a seat in the far corner of the small holding area. A few minutes later Claudio appeared handed me an envelope with all my shore excursions and quietly said follow me. We were the first passengers to swipe onboard except those dong the b2b. I did not care except after all the effort and rude moves the TAfH was not. The enemy was defeated but the stalking is endless.

Now you have the rest of the story.

Judging from the pic I'm almost certain it's not a Nespresso machine, although I'm sure I read somewhere that the coffee machines on Gem used capsules. If that's the case I hope it isn't one of Nespresso's competitors, all of whom I personally find inferior.

Dear Shoreguy

I am loving reading about your adventures on the high seas!!  Really appreciate you taking the time each day to keep us updated.  I am a newbie to NCL, (Star Cruises previously and fell in love with 'freestyle' concept).  Have booked the Gem for May Barcelona round trip, so your info and pictures have been invaluable.  Last count, 216 days?

The Gem looks magnificent!

TAfH, sounds like you might have an admirer, perhaps?

Jane

PS:  it was suggested I move across here from CC, definitely made the right move!

Yeah, I noticed the other hand.
Maybe the sweet smell lured Jim next door. I'm sure a bottle of Absolute and some weed would keep him from logging in for a couple of days. :martini:

Wasn't the purpose of the picture to show those statues in Bliss?  The first thing I noticed was that couple, but were they the subject of the pic?  It appears the woman has a nametag on, but I'm not certain.

[edit] Ok, Just looked again, it does look like a name tag and an NCl Style pin.  Why would he ber holding her like that?  Strange.

10/15/2007

Just a brief update from the Gem – After a 10.5 hour tour today I am exhausted. It is had to walk that slow. Why do people book tours that say strenuous activity with 5 kilometers of walking, that can’t really walk. We were in Pompeii, Sorrento , and Capri today. Would have been an outstanding tour in a van with 10 or 12 others. Still a very good tour just the usual cruise tour frustration of waiting for the one missing person, Getting stuck walking behind a pack moving at the speed of a snail or putting up with those pushing their way to the front.

The good news two legs of the tour were on fairies and not coaches.

Lunch in Sorrento was marginal – It was interesting to listen to the guy behind me on the fairy talking about how good it was and how fresh the veal was – he had pressed chicken breast meat like the rest of us. As we always say food is subjective.

I did have pizza in Italy – 5 pm in Capri – it was great

CTT dinner last night at Teppanyaki was great. Everyone showed up and everyone seems to be enjoying the cruise.

I walked out on the Second City show last night. The troop needs work still in my view.  By the time I left the Stardust was half empty after being almost full.

Toga Party at Bliss as I type this.

We had dinner in Magenta tonight or should I say appetizers at 9:30. Service was very good but he place was only 20% full by then. A little popcorn crayfish, Vermont Chedder and dark beer soup, and a Greek salad. I thing our waiter was going to have a heart attack when werefused to order an entry.  Everything was very tastie.

Sorry for the brief post but I need some sleep – off to Rome early for another long day. I need another sea day and there are no more.

Look like I will be on yet another Gem cruise in December – I will in fact be on the true Inaugural from NYC.

Back at you tomorrow.

Hey wait a minute. Hasn't anyone noticed that his hand is on her breast? Such a perv.

ummmmm...it was the FIRST thing I noticed!

Strange.

That is an NCL Style Pin - They have to wear on when in uniform and working. And that is the new uniform for Bliss:shock:

The perv just jumped into the picture and it is next to not on the ....

This picture does not look good either :big grin:

What a difference a day makes – off the ship at 8:15, meet up with the 5 other CTT cruisers we booked out tour with. Out driver was waiting at the gangway with his Mercedes van and off to Rome we went at spends around 160 Kph until we hid dead stop traffic due to and accident. Anyway in the center of Rome before 10:30 am.  What a packed day with lots of nice surprises. Stopped at a secret spot first to look thru the keyhole – If you have not done it I will not spoil the surprise, off to Coliseum with a quick stop to pick up tickets before going in. That saved at least an hour in line to buy tickets there. Out of there in 45 minutes and off to another hill overlooking The Forum, Then to the Pantheon, a quick stop at the Church of Di S. Ignazio  and the illusion dome, then to toss coins in the fountain, drive by of the Spanish steps, a great lunch, and off to the full tour of the Vatican with a private guide. All that and back onboard the ship before 5:30 pm.

I am completely exhausted and am looking forward to all the sea days on the TA.

I may have forgotten to mention - The casino has turned very good to me.

Dinner tonight at Tequila – as usual the food was OK, service spotty but fast, in and out in an hour. Only one restaurant remains that we have not tried and that is Grand Pacific. Never been a big fan of the giant space. Tomorrow we are back to the Bistro.

I did stop by to catch a few minutes of The Magic of Duck Cameron in Stardust. My review based on 15 minutes -  Bollywood meets marginal magic.

On the other side we did catch Second City in Spinnakers along with only about 100 others for their adults only improve. Far better then the sketch comedy the other night. We enjoyed the show even though it was just a bit over 30 minutes.

As usual we had another Klaus and Sean sighting as they did their rounds. They are looking forward to the whole gang on the TA. Marcus you had him confused since I was on this cruise how could I be on the TA. I gave him the simple explanation – I am in fact on both.

Just hung out the breakfast order. I need some sleep. Another long tour tomorrow. ….

Well I was going to try to get to sleep before midnight but that is not going to happen. My safe decided to error out and now I need to wait for security to open it. Good thing I decided to get things out for the morning tonight. It would have been panic in the morning. Last time this happened on the Dawn it took 3 calls and almost 2 hours before someone showed up.

I just want to sleep

Good news – phone just rang – security at the door but would not ring the bell since the do not disturb sign was on – magic palm pilot – safe is open – good night

Ok – I thought cruises were supposed to be restful. Had a near perfect day today but still have one more day off the ship with a tour leaving at 7:30 am. I will try and document today some time tomorrow.

The  cliff notes – the rude man in his rascal and the tour that got delayed, the hills of Tuscany,  the vineyard from the 1600s, home made pasta, white wine, red wine, reserve wines, dessert wines, grappa,  olive oil, bus ride, Bistro, wine, casino, bed.

That is all you get today

So today was a bust – beautiful weather one more time – everyday has been low 70s and sunny. The tour Monaco and the Views from EZE – The casino does not open in Monaco until 2 pm and we were back onboard at 2:30. The EZE is nothing but a hotel made from some old buildings with a view of the Med. The most detail we got from the tour guide was 20 minutes on the rail strike hand how the government was trying to change retirement from 35 years to 40 years of working to get their equivalent of Social Security.

Let’s back up in time and catch you all up as I take a break from packing L Resizing another 534 pictures as I type. Yesterdays tour was so relaxing. I even became the assistant tour director and go to hold the little sign with NCL on one side and # 25 on the other…LOL.

Lets start at the beginning of the tour. We waited about 10 minutes for two late arrivals before we departed. Up rolled the last two one in his 70 hp Rascal. I knew we were in you some delays and one of the reasons I normally avoid NCL tours. I think it is great that folks that have mobility challenges can tour but as un PC and cruel as it sounds not on my tours.

We headed out for Pisa and spent about 90minutes there. More then enough time. Got the full 50 pictures of the tower and a brief history of the remarkable architecture the least important the mistake that the tower is. The who group was ontime at the Meeting Spot to head for wine country except two. Guess who!! In all fairness we were all concerned something had happened to them. After twenty minutes we look down the street and we see them coming stopping at every street vendor as we all waited. Any concern was replaced by anger from the group. This fool was keeping us from the wine.

Even as was headed off to the parking area they continued to stop and lag behind. Thus came my chance to be the assistant tour guy. I was handed the paddle of power and asked to keep the group moving as our tour guide headed off in her camo hat and combat boots to enforce the law. Leadership is a huge responsibility and  when we reach the parking lot with 100 buses and no tour guide in site I had to take charge. Just follow me, the timid replied maybe we should wait for our guide, I marched on with the group trailing behind, turned on my wine radar, and selected a target bus, and walked direct to a bus on the far right. I was walking with my son and he asked do you know which bus it is? I told him I have no clue. Walked up to the first bus and leaned around te front of it to see the sign in the windshield – It was our bus, I was shocked, and I broke into almost uncontrollable laughter.  I got a big round of applause on the bus. Shoreguy to the rescue one more time..LOL

I nice 40 minute drive to the hills of Tuscany. 300 acre villa, wine cellar, vineyard, and olive grove. A quick tour of the gardens, the wine cellar, and off to our tables outside under a mesh canopy surrounded by olive trees. The paths were made of large stones that acted as a tank trap for the rascal.  A nice table red and white to start with bread, assorted local olives, their extra virgin olive oil, followed by cold meats, hot garlic oil bread, and some more bread with an olive paste. Homemade pasta with a great bolognaise sauce, reserve red wine, some cold veggies, a little dessert wine, some grappa, and espresso to close. I skipped the dessert wine and grappa but borrowed the full bottle of red from the guide’s table and sat in the sun overlooking the valley and killed that puppy. (pictures later). The bus ride back to the ship only took 5 minutes or at least that is how it seemed to me. Perhaps I took a little nap. Best value of all the tours and I can’t wait to get back to Tuscany and explore.

Back to the ship and I remembered I was to have cocktails a 6 pm with Calmac’s family and dinner In the Bistro. I grabbed the bottle of Jordon from my cabin that had been a gift and headed out at 6:30 after several espressos. A little more wine in their cabin and off to the Bistro. For the first time ever I had terrible escargots in the Bistro. I new something was up when the arrived within 3 minutes of ordering them. The plate was cool. The topping dark brown and almost no garlic flavor remained. I think I got someone else’s miss order that had been sitting around. Stuart’s were perfect 10 minutes later. They offered to replace them but I declined as I was not really hungry. After the second of 3 bottles of wine with dinner the rest of the night is hazy. I did stop in the casino and after an hour was even and decided to call it a night with a 7:30 am tour today.

Great news – duty free opened tonight – the ship was finally cleared by the Spanish government to sell booze and cigs duty free.

Dinner at Cagney’e tonight – Pajama party at Bliss

Hey shoreguy,

If this has already come up I missed it so please forgive me.  Someone reported on the darkside that the GEM is offering PPV movies.  Is this true?  If so, I fear the chorus of those claiming "nickel & diming" LOL

Hey Jinx

I sat at work today and read this whole blog.  I specifically posted this to get the party started.

Wow-no way would I pay that to watch PPV!  But that's just me.

On our recent RCCL cruise, I seem to remember them having PPV movies for around the same price. I could be wrong since I never ordered one.

GREAT blog! I'm really enjoying it!:big grin:

Thanks so much for posting!

As an aside....PPV or FREE, its hard for me to imagine that anyone that paid their hard earned money to go on a cruise would choose to watch a movie as opposed to any other activity that is being offered.

If you think about it, if you pay admission to the cruise (your cruise fare) and you are watching movies for "free" you still paid money so that you could be there watching the movie...and that is PPV.

No thanks on either, I'll watch my movies   between cruises!

I'm of the opinion that if someone wants to watch a movie during their cruise-more power to em.   If they enjoy it, they should do it.  Myself, that's not a priority, but I do turn the tube on in the cabin when I'm in it, ususally just watch for a while before I doze off.  Don't think I've seen a complete movie on a ship

I guess cruising becomes like being in a Hotel...1st run movies or XXX you have to be paid for! It is fine with me! I rather watch an interesting movie and pay for it...then have a oldie! But who needs to watch a movie fo example on a Caribbean cruise (????) there is too much to do, but on the other hand a cruise with many sea days....just imagine...hot bubble bath, bathrobe, dinner served by the Butler and watch a damn good movie!!!

Yes Transatlantic, there we come......:tropics:

DH is a type A personality who is always on the go.  So he relaxes on cruises, and that sometimes includes hanging out in the cabin, with no distractions, watching a movie he has been wanting to see.  That is one of the reasons we love to cruise, we are vacationing together but can do our own thing.  If I want to do something about the ship and he wants to watch a movie, great!!  We even do separate excursions sometimes.

We typically book the suites and enjoy the DVD's......but most of the time not in the cabin.   I prefer to watch/listen to them while out on deck in the sun, since I can't seem to concentrate to read with so much going on around me.

Getting the free DVDs from the butler to use just saves me some packing space in my suitcase.

That's exactly what DH and I did on Costa one night. We got back late from doing the Falls, and there was no way we could get cleaned up in time for dinner. We called the butler to bring dinner, ate in our bathrobes, then kicked back on the balcony with the door open so we could see & hear "Hello, Dolly." Weird, yes, but ~very~ relaxing.

Deb, this is ~exactly~ why we started cruising! My DH never felt comfortable letting me run off around Playa del Carmen or where ever by myself, but I felt guilty dragging him along when all he wanted to do was sit by the pool and snooze. Cruising has turned out to be the ~perfect~ compromise! The first time I came into the cabin to find him snoozing in front of the TV I thought, "Get UP! You're on vacation! Do something!" but then I remembered -- it's his vacation. If this is how he wants to spend his time & money... whatever! Not how I choose to do it, but that's why cruising works for us.

We're the same way - only both DH and I are type A's - and when on a cruise, have just as much fun sitting in our suite watching DVD's and movies as we do losting money in the Casino!  Recently on the Pearl we spent the majority of our time just hangin' in the courtyard and both of us agreed that this was the best cruise ever.  We plan on doing the same cruise/same ship again in '08 - only this time not even getting off at any of the ports.

There's something to be said for just "being"........napping, reading, eating, watching movies, etc - you know?

Thank you so much for your interesting comments. I am curious about the 'ship time' and the 'shore time' as you mentioned in Lisbon, but not since. Wouldn't that be confusing to those traveling on their own in ports? I have never been on a ship that didn't constantly change times in the nite to coincide with the ports.
We will be on the Gem Oct 28th and have an independent tour in Morocco, so I need to know what time to tell guide to meet us.

Also, a quick tip on avoiding pickpockets - put rubber bands on your wallets, men, and you will feel the resistance. After being mugged in Buenos Aires, we received lots of tips and that one is very easy to do. It really has helped as hubby felt it the next time.

Shoreguy,

Nice pictures. You are having too much fun. Wish I was there.

Are you using wireless internet connection in your cabin? Can you tell me what is the cost per minute ? Do they sell package deal?

We will be on the 11/9 sailing, and we are still debating if we want to bring our laptop or not.

 Thank you in advance.

Well it is over. Not without one more twist or two. Wake up call this morning at 6 am – midnight EDT. It is 8 pm EDT and I just walked into the house. One thing for sure no problem catching an early flight out of Barcelona with the ship docking at 5 am. I was told that he first NCL transfer for theearly flights would leave the pier at 7:30 am. At 6:15 am they called express disembarkation and red tags (early transfers) so we headed out for the pier at 6:30. Walked right off the ship but the only problem they had not finished unloading the VIP bags. Waited about 10 minutes for the last piece and headed out front to catch the bus. The first bus had already departed and it was 6:45. Rather then wait for the next bus to arrive and fill up we jumped in a cab. We were in the terminal by 7:15 and the check in area for Continental did not open until 8 am. We stood around for 45 minutes and line grew very long but we were done by 8:05 am for the 10:55 am flight.

A little coffee off to gate, boarding a breeze, middle seat open, off to Newark on time. A little Tylenol PM and the 9 hours to NJ passed very quickly. Before I new it we were starting our decent to the airport early but then the circling started. After about an hour it was off to Newburgh NY to refuel the plane. 90 minutes on the ground waiting for ATC clearance for our 14 minute flight with everyone still stuck on the plane after 11 hours. Finally got to the gate at 5 pm about 40 minutes after my sons connecting plane departed. Just to make the delay complete our bags were the first on the and as expected the last off. Last I heard my son was rebooked on a 7:50 flight that is currently delayed to 9:37. He will be working on a 27 hour door to door trip.

All that said just not they way to end what was already an exhausting cruise. TGIF and not Sunday.  Well it is 2:30 am body time. I need to open a the bags, find something to eat,  and get some sleep. I will put some final thoughts together tomorrow. I remembered very clearly today why I love cruising out of NYC.

Ships time and port time was the same everywhere except Lisbon. The only reason they felt is two confusing to change the time onboard again for one day and back again for the rest of the cruise. UK and  Lisbon are on the same time. It worked out well since it is very dark in the morning and it gave us more daylight. Sunrise today in Barcelona was almost 8:30 am.

If you want to use the internet at all bring your laptop. It was far faster then the handfull of terminals in the lobby that always seemed to have a wait. I went thru $200 on th internet Most of that was downloading company mail with those wonderful 4 MB attachments :shoot me:.

In a package it is about $.40 per minute.

After sitting at work the other day reading all of this I am so excited about our 2 day cruise in December.  I also looked into changing our spring cruise on the Dawn to one on the Gem.  DH said he'd rather do Bermuda than the Florida/Bahamas.  While I agree with the port choice, we are much more ship people than port people.  I guess my mistake was in not having him read this blog.

I just read a short commentary - really can't call it a review - on CC on this cruise.  It basically said, there were no major problems.  It did nothing to make me sit and figure out how I can get on this ship for a real cruise.

Thanks shoreguy.  They really should make you godfather just for the excitement you generate.

There are no MAJOR changes. Most of the changes are cosmetic. Furniture, carpet, etc.  The fish no longer swim forward in the hallways but the mamals do. Dolphins in the carpet. Internet cafe in the atrium with very few terminals, and the updates to Spinnakers posted earlier.

I think Sean was right - not sure how well the "sports bar" like changes to Spinnakers will work. Every time we thought about using the shuffleboard or pool table when we got there something was going on.  Passengers were using both tables to sit on

One other negative - the Gem merchandise was junk in my view. I never saw worse hats and for the first time I did not buy anything that said Gem. Even the ceramic Gem was still using the same mold as the Dawn. With 3 ships now with a different topline you think they could update it.  I did see a couple of folks in t-shirts that looked OK . I may have to look harder next cruise.

Junk merchandise..that sucks

my wife commented on that on the Dawn

She wanted to buy a nice shirt or sweatshirt and she thought

the quality was poor.

Great Blog

Welcome home, and thanks for all of your postings. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your adventures.
I just booked the Gem yesterday, and I'm really looking forward to it. Our room is aft, above the Bliss Lounge. I didn't realize it when I booked, and my Cruise Consultant just said it was above the jogging deck, not the lounge. I'm hoping it's not a late night disco, but I can always change rooms.
Hope you get some good rest this weekend!

If you have one of the aft facing cabins it sould be no issue. You are aft of the disco. Bliss is the lat night spot. They close Spinnakers around midnight and the party continues in Bliss. I know that Insidecabin (Phil) was in 8633 and inside aft and could hear the bass until Bliss closed. His answer just join the party in Bliss until it closed:big grin:

Oh, how I wish I could still keep those hours! :ooooh: We stay up later on vacation, but rarely past midnight. I booked 8632, pretty close to Phil's cabin. I wonder if it will be far enough away that we won't feel that bass!
Thanks for the info. Hope you caught up on some sleep.:sleepy:

When booking so new were we were going to be, I think it is just the two aft inside on deck 8 that are effected so worth knowing if you are a light sleeper of like to retire early, you get a thump thump types sound, On the last night the volume was lower in bliss but still acceptable and much less evident in the cabin. It is not clear which speakers cause the problem, there are some in the ceiling just below the cabins.

I did raise the issue with the relevent people so they are aware that it may come up on future cruises.

In retrospect we probably should have seen if we could have been moved.

The other insides on that part of the deck are well placed for Bliss and the Blue lagoon for the late night party/snacking people or a pre dinner Margarita in Tequila

Thanks for the further info. Maybe they'll have it taken care of before our cruise next April. I've never booked this far out, but it's one of the weeks DH has off, so I didn't have too many choices and wanted one of those aft cabins. We've always been forward and wanted to see how we would like the aft.

Heading to Mom's for a couple of days. Have a great weekend.

Lets get it right:big grin:

"I did read that you could feel the bass in 8633, but it's directly below Bliss, not under the jogging track..."

Deck 8 is above Bliss, the promenade (walking deck) is also below on deck 7. Above deck 8 are deck 9 cabins.

You can see the space below deck 8 balconies that is the promenade. No noise issue at all.

Excellent blog...felt like we were there with you.  We will be on the Jade next August, following a similar itinerary.  However no Gibraltor - website indicates the stop will be in Cetua, across the water on North Moroccan coastline.  After reading your blog, I'm sorry we won't be stopping at the big rock.

What was your favorite(s) stop on this cruise? How did your son make out getting home?

Also, as an aside, thanks so much for posting that picture of the Pearl as we went through the Canal two weeks ago.

Ciao and welcome home,

Wowsa, WOWsa, WOWSA Shoreguy!  Thank you for entertaining, informing and posting pics of your vacation.  You took us right there with you.  You are a hero for taking on the pickpockets!  I hear that is the number one thing to watch out for in Portugal and Spain.  Too funny about the TAFH...hey, you know you are famous when you have your very own stalker!  Enjoy your sleep this weekend!

Thanks for all the info you've given and sharing your cruise with us.  I apologize again for missing your original post about the PPV on the TV.

Welcome home, but isn't it a bummer to have a cruise end?  Although I'm sure you've got you next several cruises planned (if not already booked)!

Just curious how your cat got along.  Did he (or she) run out of food?  I'll bet doggie is glad to be home!

I guess you do NOT like "Court TV"! I would have shot them...but the AB's still have the uncomfi balcony chairs!

It was the same on my B-day cruise in May on the Pearl...I had very loud neighbors and it was impossible to sleep in with them! You could hear them through the closed doors!

The later(Mon-thurs) part of the cruise was very port intensive with long days, 1400pax went to Rome on the NCL excursions and only 400pax stayed on board Livorno, so most were tired and needed to be up early the following mornings.

Scheduling the parties on these nights meant very few turned out for them, that week the high passenger count in Bliss was I think around 11(not counting bowlers) mostly cruise director staff from the Sunday night on.

I think a better turn out might have been achieved if these had been scheduled for the Fri,Sat nights after the early departure from Gib which was followed by 2 sea days. On those days we had Country and 70's in Spinnker and nothing in Bliss(just the disco)

On the 2n pre cruise bliss was packed.

Expect a party night on the TA before the only port day

You should have purchased one of David Naster's fart gags.  That may have cleared the balcony.

I don't think it was deliberate more likely  those scheduling not thinking ahead/adapting, seen it on other ships, from a revenue point of view there were opportuities missed to get people spending

Not sure how effective other scheduling was, this trip spent hardly any time doing CD staff related activities.

Just finished reading Jim's blog to check where I've been during the last couple of weeks :big grin:

Someone asked how long Romano would be on the Gem - we spoke to him on Saturday night and he said he has an open ended contract which can be ended by either NCL or him.  He did a show on the first of the two nights out of Barcelona.  The filmed part of the show was subtitled in Spanish and he did his introductory "speech" in French.

I would agree that the Gem merchandise was very poor.  We would normally buy at least one T-shirt each but there was very little which was specifically GEM Inaugural and many of the T-shirts listed ports we didn't visit.  We bought 1 nail file and 1 pen but had expected to spend much more than that.

Thanks again. There's a man on my balcony!!!! :holymoly: Nice picture.
It looks like the jogging track only goes as far back as the balcony, but I think we'll be fine. The noise probably wouldn't bother me, but it would DH.

Jim, I would like to hear more about the apes and how they settled there.  How well do they co exist with natives of the area and visitors?  Do you have any more info to share? I found those shots facinating.

The apes were very friendly, as long as you weren't holding food.  The drivers warn you not to carry food, and there are signs all over the place warning you.

Sure enough, I saw a woman step from her van eating a candy bar.  An ape jumped on her, snatched the candy, and took off with her screaming.  Idiot.

Our driver's wife was a British veterinary who was hired by the British government to take care of the apes.  He said he had several apes with handicaps or birth defects living at his house.  He referred to them as "cheeky little thieves".

A favorite trick is to have them jump on your head or shoulder while the driver feeds them a peanut.  Of course my wife, who works at the local zoo, just had to try it.

There is quite a story behind the apes (really tailless monkeys) No one is sure when they first came there but it has been 100s of years. They clearly came from north Africa perhaps when the Arabs owned the island. Most of the area on top of the rock is a nature preserve and the diverent tribes of monkeys live in different areas.

The stress of all the people during WWII caused then to stop breeding and they almost died out. Down to less then 100. Since then they have been protected. Folktail that if the monkeys go the rock will fall. They all get checked by a Vet once a year and tagged. To keep them from moving down into town they are feed once a day with healthy food in their respective areas.

Each ape has a name and they have been named after members of the Royal Family since WWII. Yes there is a Charles. Elizabeth etc.

They love the vistors and in fact know all the drivers.  Especialy those that always bring a little treat. They hang out at the tourist spots (grab some unhealty food like kids) and head back at night to their tribe.

I think they are back to over 300 apes now

Here are the facts - close to my memory from the tour

Apes are in fact a tail-less breed of monkey, (Macaca Silvanus) whose natural habitat is in the mountains of Morocco and Algeria. They were most probably first brought here by the British in the early eighteenth century. The earliest written record of the apes in Gibraltar dates back to 1740. Legend has it that the apes are a symbol of British sovereignty and if they go the British will leave Gibraltar, "That's why we have to feed them". When their numbers diminished during WWII, Sir Winston Churchill gave strict orders that a minimum of 24 should be maintained.

Today there are over 200 apes living free on the Upper Nature Reserve. They are divided into five packs and are quite territorial. A male ape which can grow up to 15 - 20 kgs reaches maturity at 5 yrs and is in his prime at 7 yrs. The female starts breeding from the age of 3 yrs and produces 1 offspring each year on average. The usual lifespan of an ape is from 18 to 21.

All the apes feed on wild roots, berries, veg and fruit.

Heading to Mom's for a couple of days. Have a great weekend.

Sorry for the delayed response to this but we spent an additional 10 days in France after the cruise, and then I came home with an awful cold (still recovering), so I'm just now catching up on this board.

About the noise issue from Bliss:  We were in cabin 8132 and my parents were in 8632.  In fact, that's my father (Mr. Happy) on the balcony in Jim's picture of the aft cabins.  I can report hearing no music at all.  There were vibrations but I'm still not sure if these were from the engines or from the bass in Bliss.  In any case, I'm extremely noise-sensitive and I was not bothered in the least, and we spent quite a bit of time in our cabin because I loved it so much.  I checked with my parents and they weren't bothered by noise, either.  These are fabulous cabins, and the view was beyond my most hopeful expectations, and I'm sure that you will enjoy being in yours as much as I enjoyed mine.

I'll be posting pictures of our cabin in a day or two, as soon as I'm feeling up to it.  We took thousands of them between the two of us, plus video, and it takes time to go through them all.

By the way, it was so nice meeting everyone from this board.  We had a fabulous cruise and the ship is beautiful.  I wish I could book the TA and do it all over again with you guys!

Get ready for the next blog. It should offer a different perspective. I got the upsell call today and will now have to rough it in an A3 Courtyard Villa. Not sure I will like the seclusion but a once in a lifetime deal.

Off to Barcelona on Friday - I will start a new thread later this week.
