Found this interesting article about the  history of the ss Oceanic.

http://www.ssmaritime.com/oceanic.htm

Heard that the Oceanic now the Peaceboat will be coming to New York sometime this month for a few days.

Our first, second and third cruises were on the Oceanic . Anyone one else ever cruise on her?

I was on the Big Red Boat with the family. That was the Oceanic, yes?

It had a huge movie theatre and cabins that slept 5 people.

Hi Susie:big grin:

Yes that is the ship. Formerly owned by Home , then then Premier then know as the Big Red Boat. The cabins were a very nice size .We were hooked on cruising the moment we saw her sitting at the pier:big grin:

Hi Chris:big grin:

It was my mom's first and only cruise. We had really crazy seas ....something about the alignment of the moon and planets. My mother was caught saying the rosary more than once.

Too funny:P It was my Mom and Dad's first and only cruise too. We took them on the Oceanic as a 40th Anniversary gift. Smooth seas thankfully. Dad won $500 at the Casino on his first pull on the quarter machines. They loved it.

I was on the Oceanic in 1968.   Unfortunately, it was to see my parents off on a cruise while sis, bro, and I had to spend the 10 days with Gramps and Gran.  I had just gotten my first REAL camera, so I toured that ship top to bottom.

Of course, the ALL ASHORE WHO'S GOING ASHORE horn blasted, and we had to get off and watch the ship slip out of her berth.  It would be almost 40 years later before I had the chance to watch a cruise ship do that out of NY.

BTW, imagine my surprise about 10 to 15 years ago to be in the Bahamas, looking at this big red boat, looking at this ship, and slowly realizing it was the one and only Oceanic, just looking a bit odder (same thing happened to me in the 80's finding the Norway thinking she looked oddly familiar, pulling over, and knowing it was none other than my favorite ship from the 60's, the SS France).

My first experience onboard a ship was in NYC when I was a kid and yes, I had to get off and go home. I don't know what ship it was. I was really young, maybe 5 or 6.

My mother's boss was taking a transatlantic and he took his kids and me on a tour. They were in a suite and I remember the champagne chilling and flowers.

Very different from the cruise I took the first time out.

Great pictures of the Ny pier. Especially liked the ones of the DAWN:big grin: Having cruised on her 5 times . She is still our favorite.

Almost forgot there was a time when you could have Bon Voyage parties and invite guests on the ship. That was a lot of fun.

Twice, I have made the trip into the city to see the QM2 when she was still docking in Manhattan.   Twice, she was late and I missed her.  The last time was due to a jumper.

So, I've YET to see this magnificent ship.  In fact, I've still never seen anything bigger than a Voyager class ship.

Son succès est immédiat et il deviendra un habitué des piers de Manhattan durant plus de vingt ans offrant des croisières hebdomadaires vers les Bahamas, mais également les Bermudes.

It seems Peace Boat was at the westside terminal Fri and Sat. June 12 & 13 :(

Who knows NYC site could be wrong. Hard to be in NYC when June 12, 2009 the ships itinerary has her in Bergen, Norway
