I can highly recommend a couple of NYC hotels.......

The Michaelangelo (51st & 7th Ave) is our favorite. It is in a great location, just a few block north of Times Square.  Subway is just a block or two away.

We stayed at the Trump International Tower this past November. I was somehwat leery of staying at a Trump property, but it was GREAT! The location at Columbus Circle is hard to beat. Right at the corner of Central Park and Broadway, it is convenient to the subway and busline.

.........more to come!!

We just got back from a few days in NYC.

My wife and I and 2 friends were looking for an inexpensive (under 200.00 per night) hotel.  We wound up staying at the Super 8.  The room was clean and a good location to Times Square and the theaters (we were going to a show). Not sure if we would stay there again.

The jack hammering until 2:00 am was a bit of a problem :wtf:

In the past we have stayed at the Belvedere.  This is closer to the Pier and much quieter.  The rooms were bigger and we had a refridgerator and a microwave in the room.  This was good since we had our kids with us so we brought some snacks.

For all you seasoned NYC people:

We are looking into our options for August, 1 or 2 nights pre-cruise. So far we are looking into the Belvedere, The Skyline, Travel Inn, Waldorf Astoria (saw a good on-line price).  Looking in the 200-300 range (2 adults and 2 kids) and a place to park the car. Any advice is welcome.

STAY AWAY from skyline and travel inn.  belvedere is a bit better, but not by much.    only WALDORF towers are nice, but much more expensive.  waldorf is old, and while looks nice on the outside, has a smell of old,,, if you know what i mean.

We stayed at the Westin at 43rd (I think - might have been 42nd) and 8th last August.  One block from Time's Square.  It was a very nice hotel and the rooms were gorgeous.  I got it on Hotwire for $151 a night.

SECAUCUS?  didnt know there were nice places - which hotels do you have in mind?  secaucus is a 95% industrial/commercial town. im wondering if they built something new there that i dont know of, other than a bunch of  limited service marriott family hotels that are along a busy and dirty highway with nowhere to go?

Just sent this to someone else, and thought I would post it here as well!  Also, the Waldorf Astoria is a great hotel, but really only if you stay in the remodeled part... they may have fully renovated by now... but when we stayed, we stayed in a non renovated room, which we got for a GREAT price, but I found out why... don't get me wrong, still a great hotel, but I was so hyped I was a bit disappointed...Waldorf Towers is very nice.

Are there any other areas you would want to stay?  On the East side is Radisson on Lexington... I stayed there "pre renovation" and paid I believe $179/night... small rooms, but decent hotel and great location!!  The Grand Hyatt (at Grand Central) isn't bad either... I think we got it for around $200... although once got it on Priceline for $160... HORRIBLE room!!  But I don't think their normal rates are all that bad... good location.

This is more for the TS/Theatre district:

There are some great hotels in the Broadway/Times Square area... but some of the nicer ones are pretty pricey... some of them also have nightly minimums... but some that I would say are really nice...

The Westin is nice (when I stayed, I think it was $500/night, something like that),  gorgeous hotel, great views, a block from TS
Dream and Hudson are both nice, but SMALL!!!  I mean, really small... Hudson is more like a boutique hotel.  Dream is really nice, but I wouldn't stay again because of the size...
LeParker Meredien is nice, but generally over priced... but a VERY nice hotel
Hotel Metro is a nice hotel, and typically you can find for a decent price... I think I've generally stayed for around $200/night.. . it's about 6-8 blocks from TS?
Hilton Times Square is touristy, but you can usually get a good rate, and it's a nice hotel... location wise, it's great...
Marriott Marquis... you can't beat the views from the revolving rooftop bar!!!  You can usually get some good rates on this one... again, it's a touristy one due to the PERFECT location and the bar.
I have not stayed at the Belvedere, but had some business partners stay there once and it seemed very nice... same with the Sheraton Hotel and Towers...

In all honesty, I've stayed in some less than perfect or desirable hotels in NYC primarily because when I'm there, I'm never in my room... and sometimes it is impossible to find a really nice room for under $600!  I would definitely stick with something in the 3 (preferably 3.5) star to 4 star range... and if you are staying in that area, they usually keep the hotels pretty nice....

I recently got back from a trip to NYC. We stayed at The Westin in Times Square (41st @ 8th Ave).

I typically don't like the huge chain hotels in New York.....but this one had the best price for the weekend I was going to be there.
We had an "executive corner room", in a seperate part of the hotel. The corner room was nice & large with 3 windows and had a great view. We could even see over to the Hudson River! The bed was very comfortable.  However, even though we were on the 16 floor, it was very noisy from the traffic. We were right across from the Port Authority Bus station, and cars/cabs honked their horns all the time and the sirens from the fire trucks/ambulances were ear splitting!
Continental breakfast was inlcuded in the room rate, and snacks in the evening.

Pro's:
For a tourist, it is a great location....1 block from Times Square.
Subway station within the same block.
Room and bathroom were a good size.

Con's
Very noisy from traffic. Had to sleep with earplugs.
Impersonal, big chain hotel

I would recommend this hotel for tourists that wanted to be in the Times Sqaure area, or first time travelers to Manhatten.

You would love the Waldorf.  We stayed there a few times and enjoyed it each time.  Just don't stay when the President is in town for UN meetings.  Clinton was there and it was either a military target or the safest place on the planet.  I would definitely stay there again.  We have also stayed at the Hotel Edison and thought it was nice.  47th Street I think right at TImes Square.  Great location.

We searched and compared way too many NYC hotels for our pre-cruise night in August.

We decided to stay at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers since they were offering a pretty good rate for AAA members.  I will report back how it was.

Glad you re-opened this thread!
I think you will be happy with the location of the Sheraton. I know exactly where it is and it's very convenient to Times Square, Central Park and 5th Avenue. And it's only a block away from the Stage Deli!!!!!!  Make sure you have lunch there and get a slice of cheesecake!!!!!!

I wanted to report back on our pre-cruise night at the Sheraton Hotal and Towers.

We left Boston later than we had hoped on Friday August 17th at 11:00 am.  We made pretty good time until we got into NY and the traffic and crazy thunderstorms caused us to pull up to the Valet parking at 7:30 pm.  This was over 8.5 hours in a car with 2 kids!  The valet must have seen the look on my face and immediately called someone to get our bags and he took the car.  We walked into the lobby and were immediately checked in.  We must have been up in our room on the 11th floor with the Bell Man and the bags in about 10 minutes total from when we left the car.

The lobby is very nice, the rooms good, beds very comfortable.  It was quiet outside and we all slept great!  I thought that the service was excellent.  It was the quickest and smoothest check out and car retrieval that I have ever experienced as well.

We also got to have some great food and cheesecake from the Stage Deli.  It was delicious.  Thank for the tip about this place as it is right next to the Hotel.

The drive to the hotel to the pier was about 1 mile.

It was a very brief NYC stay.  We would not hesitiate to stay there again.

The cruise really could not have been better. :big grin:  Thank you for asking.

Excellent cabin, weather, seas, service.  It was our 10th cruise and our best so far.  I am almost done with the review and I will post it soon.
