We (DH and me) will be spending two nights in New York at the beginning of July (at the end of the Epic TA) and want to go to at least one Broadway show. Our preference is for musicals with our favourites being Les Mis, Miss Saigon and Wicked. DH is keen to see the Spiderman musical but it looks as though tickets are only on sale to Amex Card holders (we don't have an Amex card).
What show(s) would you recommend?
Where do you recommend we purchase our tickets from (we want to purchase them in advance rather than on the day)?

| Well Wicked is great, but I think you have already seen it. We went to Billy Elliot while in London last month and I enjoyed it. Les Miz and Mis Saigon are my all-time favorites. I think Broadway and the West End are sort of in the dulldrums these days as it seems they are just recycling old stuff. I really didn't like Hairspray that much, but it is ok. If you haven't seen Mama Mia and you like the music of Abba (I don't, but still really like Mama Mia, my DW loves it). Of course it has been out for a decade or more. The Phantom is great, but I assume you have seen it too.

Thanks, JC. Yes, we've seen Wicked (Broadway and West End) and we're going to see Les Mis for the 9th (I think) time early in 2010!! Haven't seen Billy Elliot so that's a possibility (enjoyed the film). Haven't seen Mamma Mia but do like Abba and enjoyed the film. We're booked to go and see Whistle Down The Wind (second time for DH and I, first for DS) and The Sound of Music (first time to a professional production) in Edinburgh early 2010. Last week we went to see We Will Rock You which is based on the music of Queen. It was very good with a better story than Mamma Mia but still a bit contrived to fit in with the music. Not sure if it has transferred to Broadway? Have also seen Phantom as you expected.

Mamma Mia the play is in my opinion far superior to the movie. I really didn't like the movie.
I have not seen Whistle Down the Wind, are they restaging it in the West End? It didn't seem to hit here when it originally was released. I like ALW, but it seems that he isn't very committed to many of his projects.

We saw Whistle Down The Wind not long after it had premiered in the West End and thought it was really good. This time it's touring and we're going to see it in Edinburgh. It didn't last all that long in the West End.
We're not the biggest ALW fans around but WDTW had some help from Jim Steinman

No, another one to think about.
Is there a good site (or sites) to check on what is being shown on Broadway?

One of my colleagues recently saw Memphis and thought it was out-standing. I couldn't tell you what it was about but she really enjoyed it.
She also saw Rock of Ages but didn't enjoy as much as Memphis although Constantine (from one of the seasons of American Idol...not sure if you get it there?)is in this play and he was very good.
I've also heard great things about Jersey Boy but I LOVE Mary Poppins the movie so I think that would be my first choice...or Mamma Mia if you haven't already seen it.

| I just took a look at the site Shoreguy shared with us...I am a huge fan of the movie Hair. Loved the music and the dancing so with that said, I would seriously consider this one as well.

I have looked there I was really looking for some recommendations for shows. I think we've seen nearly all the best ones that are currently on.

They've had them playing some shows recently. Great cast!

Us, too!
I've got a free day on 2/14 and I'm looking for a date, but I think hubby would get a wee bit upset if you and I went to see Jersey Boys.

Don't worry about it. I don't think your Husband would be concerend at all going with a guy that spends his time on a Broadway thread!

How about Phantom of the Opera? I dunno, I'd give it all up to live with a phantom who sings to me like that.
