We will be flying into New York 2 days early (Monday, Tuesday) for our cruise.  Which airport should we fly into? Any suggestions for places to stay? Rent a car or use taxis?

Can't help you with the airport because we drove but we ended up getting the Westin Times Square for $149 for the last week of August on Hotwire.  Great location - one block from times square and maybe 3 or 4 blocks from the pier in Manhatten.

Taxis or Subway !   Check this site for hotels on the Jersey side of the Hudson,  cheap transportation into the city and hotel rates are a bit "cheaper"

Thanks for both the suggestions.

Here's a few threads that might help you out.

I would highly suggest flying in/out of Newark.  It's nicer than either JFK or LaGuardia and it's a snap to get on the train into New York! Or you could take a cab or limo.

The prices of NYC hotels are **wicked** -- but in Dec 2005, right before we left on the Dawn, my TA found us an odd little place that was comparatively affordable (esp. with government rate), clean, and large (2 rms!).  Pleasant people running it and while not in the fanciest part of town, not an alarming part either.  It was called Off Soho Suites   http://www.offsoho.com/

We stayed at the one on Rivington and walked a few blocks over to a very nice restaurant called The Tenament  ---- well, scratch that: just searched and found out it's closed.  Too bad.  But there were other nice restaurants nearby, esp on Ludlow St.

They called a town car to take us to the pier (no more expensive than a cab but nicer).  I'd tell you how much that cost but my friend paid that tab and I was just too excited about the whole thing to pay attention!

Flew to New York a few weeks ago for a cruise on the Dawn. Flew into LaGuardia which IMO has seen it's better days. There are three airports to choose from and can depend on the airline that you choose but any of the three will work. Taxi from the ship back to LGA was about $50.00 plus tips. We hired a car to pick us up on the flight in. Much more expensive but also very nice.

We stayed at the Doubletree Suites in Times Square. The location was great but it is also very busy. The hotel has good sized rooms for New York City from what I am told. We paid $309.00 a night plus tax. NYC is not cheap at all. Would stay here again even with the crowds in Times Square.

Thanks.  Would you fly to Newark and do the same?

We stayed at the Westin in Times Square a few months ago. It was a good location if you want to be "where the action is", right in Times Square.
There are 2 Sheratons' up a few blocks on 7th Ave, up around 53-54 St.

Is that where ya'll are, Pete?  Then, there is no excuse for you not to get a cheesecake snack before bed one night!

If ya'll like good, Italian food, we know of a GREAT place on the upper west side, not too far up. An easy subway ride for you from where you are. Only a few stops. It's a little neighborhood place....nice, but not fancy and great food.

That's exactly what we did last night! Buying cheesecake at 11:30! Too much!

I finished it this morning, as I couldn't throw it away, nor did I want to pack it!

And now we are home! :( Too late for italian, but we know we are having Arthur Ave raviolies tonight!

HOT HOT HOT!

Not familiar with that airport but I'm sure that would work.
