We are booked on our first riverboat trip with Grand Circle Travel - Ancient Egypt - 15 days. First half in Cairo and the second half on the MS Anuket. I'm soooooo looking forward to this!

My wardrobe consists of covered body parts with crinkle gauze or other lightweight fabric. Cool is the order of the day. Even bought two crystal neck gizzies that stay cool for 2 days.

I have my ExOfficio big shirts, hat and unmentionalbles and am wearing my Rockport walking shoes everywhere.

I'll be taking my laptop mainly to occupy my time on those long dreaded flights and to upload the bazillion photos I plan to take.

We will fly out of LAX on the 16th, spend 2 nights in NY then fly to Cairo on 4/18. At least I'll get a 3 hour head start on the jet lag! (grin) Going with another couple we met on the Jewel (Med Cruise) a couple of years ago.

So, who's been? What advice to you have? What should I prepare for?--Ginny

I get the brochures from Grand Circle and they have so many trips that I'd like to do someday.  But, for some reason, the Far East and the Middle East & Africa  hold no appeal to me.  I'm not sure why, either......

Egypt has always held my interest, just as China did. I think it's really going to be something to behold! Can't wait to get to the Nile. Cairo has no interest for me other than the museum.

I probably will think of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton all the way down the Nile and Moses too!

My SIL took one of those cruises about a decade ago and really enjoyed it.  Seeing the pyramids and the valley of the kings would be a dream vacation.

It's like seeing your history book live and in person! I'm now searching for private tour guides in Cairo.

Oh joy!!!!

I'm also really looking forward to a river boat with only 130 guests! So quaint and cozy. I hear riverboats are very relaxing. They sail during the day and dock at night - opposite of large cruise ships.

They also dock side by side sometimes, so when you leave your boat, you actually may have to walk through 2 or 3 boats before you get to the pier!

Wow, all this spanking/whipping is really encouraging :-)

Do you know why you cannot starve in Egypt?  Because of all the sand which is there (sandwiches there).

I crack myself up. :roflmao:

Egypt has been on my list, but I'm a little nervous with volitile political situations there. You read so much, things quiet down, then blow up again. Hard to get any concrete factual info at times, it seems like rumours blow into something that they actually aren't.
Guides are a definate there. And be careful, I"ve read that they too can be the problem. I would research others use of them, and get "the goods" before hiring.

Ya, I hear ya. We got ripped off by a cabbie in Istanbul - gouged us, but we paid. He also sort of did that for lunch. He took us to a place and it was really pricey. Ouch! Oh well. In all our travels that was the worst we've encountered - so not bad.

I was on ahem... the other board... and one name in Egypt kept coming up, so I contacted her. We've chatted back and fourth and I wouldn't mind booking a couple of days in Cairo with her.

I too get skittish with the political stuff. Canceled a trip to the middle east when those German tourists were blown up outside the Museum of Egyptology. That was awful. Now they have armed guards assigned to tourists. Sheesh.

At this point, Los Angeles freeways are probably more deadly -- never know when someone will shoot you! :saywhat:

Seawitches - We did a land trip to Cairo this past March - The tour guide we used gave us a business card - so if you want I will post it as soon as I find it.  Hidden deep in the pile of trip information.  He was fantastic - took us to Saqqara (Step Pyramids) Papyrus museum, Emporium (tons of gold, silver jewelry as well as some very nice momentos, lunch was included as well as Giza and the Sphynx.  He was also willing to take us to the Perfumery, but we declined.  We had booked a tour through the travel agency located at the Sheraton Nile.  They provided the guide as well as a driver (nice airconditioned car) the cost was $800 Egyptian Pounds - around $133.00 for the two of us.  Mind the E.P. was about $0.18 per Canadian dollar at the time.  When Achmed gave us his card he said he could do the tour cheaper so to call him when we returned to Cairo.

The nice thing about having a tour guide is that you don't get mobbed by the local hawkers (as much)

Ok - here it goes:

Ahmed A. Mosalam - English Tour guide

Mobile cell : 012 7250427  Tel 02 2903859

email  ahmed_a_razek@hotmail.com

or email: ahmed_a_razek@yahoo.com

He does the very best impression of the archeologist Dr. Zwass - He may remember us we were there March 17th-20th - The Robertsons - he was great, personable and very informative.  Enjoy

We did do the Antiquities museum on our own - but had we known Ahmed then we would have had him take us through there as well.  Big place and very overwhelming amount of artifacts.
