OK, volcanic ash will have no impact on a cruise ship but it has had a major impact on flights to/from Europe so it's good to see that NCL have taken this into account!!  I wish they would spell check the messages they post on their website!

Europe Volcanic Erruption Travel Alert (4/16 8:45pm EST)

Miami   -    Apr 16, 2010   ---    Embarkation for Norwegian Jade in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday, April 18 will continue as scheduled.

We will update ncl.com as we get more information.

There is a thread at CC in the RCI forum about people in Northern England stressing out about getting to Southampton (Soton).  I seriously giggle when these poor Brits stress out about a 300 mile drive.  Heck it is 200 miles to any city from where I live.  Of course with the price they pay for gas it is a bit more exciting for them.  When we picked up the wife's car in Stuttgart 2 years ago, we drove 1500 miles and gas was from 8 to 10 bucks a gallon.  I filled that car up today and it was 2.85....  if Barry wasn't president I can imagine the talking heads on TV talking about how W was taking care of his oil buddies.  Maroons.

I just checked Travel Insured and Access America (two companies that we sell), and they are both covering this similar to adverse weather; however, for policies purchased on or after April 15, they are not covering this eruption, since it is a foreseen event.

I have clients on Splendour of the Seas out of Venice this week, and their cruise departure was pushed back from yesterday until today, probably in the hope that more passengers will make it to the ship. Unfortunately, their stop for Ephesus was canceled.

Exactly no different then a hurricane. Once the storm is identified any insurance purchased will not cover and costs related to the foreseen event.

So I guess anyone planning travel to Europe this summer and has not already purchased insurance they are SOL if delayed or cancelled due to the valcano.

Missing Kusadasi (Ephesus) sucks. One of my absolute favorite ports in the Eastern Med.

Saw a story on our local news last night about people who are stranded at JFK. One of the people was a Mom with 2 kids. What are these poor people doing while waiting for flights? Camping in the airport I guess. This event has such far reaching effects it's staggering.

Exactly right.  I did see a thread on the dark side discussing some annual coverage policies that aren't covering, but they're usually more limited anyway.

Yes the European gas prices are eye opening.....a few years ago we were staying a a riverfront hotel that Gabriele's cousin owns about 10 miles North of Heidelburg and we were sitting on the roof top beer garden one evening watching boats go up and down the river while enjoying some of Germany's finest.

We saw a 35 ft cabin cruiser that looked to be approx the same size as the one we owned at the time and were talking about how awesome it would be to cruise our boat all over the rivers of Europe........I then started to compute gas prices in my head and about passed out.....I won't go into details but a quick overview shows that we quickly put that idea right out of our heads...

Fuel....approx $9 a gallon, probably more when we retire...     Our fuel tank capacity  200 gallons

MPG of any motor powered boat larger than 30 ft ....approx 1 1/2 miles to the gallon at the most 2 MPG

 :wtf:                 :ohhellno:          :saywhat:              :titanic:

Our petrol (gas) is currently £1.20 per litre.  That's approx $1.80 per litre or about $6.82 per US gallon.

Hmm, last week the experts stated a piece of ash could bring down a jet, now they're saying tests were ok. Is this all in the "name of the almighty dollar"?
Can you imagine the mud slinging (not to mention the legal suits) if a fully loaded Jumbo came down??
Yes, you're correct, military would have taken that risk!
There is no way the airline industry can take a financial hit like this. They are all already in problems, and damn it I have to get to London in August!!!

I think the issue is the ash is all over 50,000 feet well above were airplanes fly. Better safe then sorry.

In 1982, British Airways flight 9 flew into a volcanic ash cloud at night near Indonesia, losing all four engines on a Boeing 747.  The flight crew glided out of the cloud (that they didn't know about and couldn't see), and eventually got three of the four engines running normally again.  Needless to say, the safety books were re-written regarding flying in/near volcanic ash, but other jets have lost engines in ash clouds since then as well.

Regarding the test flights, my understanding from the news article I read is that they were flown in empty airliners, by normal airline pilots.

My personal guess is that they will re-open the airspace for daytime only flights soon, as long as the ash cloud is above 45,000 feet.....

Heard that now 3 countries have flown test flights with empty jets and all ok, but then they add the disclaimer, "can't be sure".
Hope it settles down, although I thought I heard there was another huge spew in the last hour or so. So many people still stuck wherever they are. And of course I hope her larger sister Volcano doesn't get angry too......
