Several months ago I created a diary of a cruise vacation that my wife and I had taken and then posted it on that other web site once we returned. Since I no longer post over there, I would like to continue that tradition of posting my diaries on this great message board. This weekend the wife and I spent time on the Norwegian Spirit on one of their cruises to nowhere. Here now is my diary.

First a little background:

The first time the wife and I went cruising was in 1989. We had taken the NCL’s Southward from Los Angeles with stops in San Diego, Catalina Island, and Ensenada, Mexico, before returning back to Los Angeles four days after we began.

It was one of the worst vacations we had ever taken. The wife spent the first two days sea sick and I spent the last two days sea sick. We decided that cruising wasn’t for us.

Fast forward to last year and I was looking for a different type of vacation to take. We had been fortunate enough to visit almost every major United States city, been on bus tours, driven hundreds of thousands of miles, flew on dozens of flights, and traveled up and down the Mississippi River by riverboat. We’ve been to Las Vegas about three dozen times and to the themed parts of Orlando and southern California almost as many times.

However, the wife wanted to go back to Disney in Florida but I just couldn’t stomach that again. Looking for something different I learned that NCL was now leaving from New York City, less than 15 miles from where I live. One of their ships, the Norwegian Spirit, had a tour that would allow us to spend a day in the Orlando area, visit Miami, a private island, and Nassau in the Bahamas. I figured the time was right to give cruising another chance.

Armed with pill boxes full of sea sick pills the wife and I were prepared. What followed was a week-long vacation that was one of the best vacations we ever had. We never got sick although this trip did cause us to catch the dreaded cruising addiction.

Fast forward to April and May of this year and the wife and I decided to go back on the Norwegian Spirit again. This time we booked a back to back cruise which consisted of another trip to Orlando, Nassau and their private island with a tour to Bermuda, Tortola, and St. Thomas for 14 days. What followed was another one of our greatest vacations ever.

Spending two weeks on the ship we really got to know a lot of the cruise ship hosts who made our time even more enjoyable. My wife was soon on a first name basis with them and them with her.

I decided to surprise my wife with one of the one-night cruises to nowhere that NCL was offering on the Norwegian Spirit. I chose this particular weekend because we would be leaving again in three weeks on the Norwegian Crown for a week-long cruise to Bermuda.

I told my wife about our one night cruise last Sunday night despite heaving booked this trip last June. What follows is my diary of what happened on the trip for your viewing pleasure.

Anticipating the one night cruise we wondered whether any of the cruise ship hosts that we had come to know would still be on the ship. There was Scotty, Glen, Vaughn, Luz, Dave, George, and a few others who we really hoped to see again.

As the one night trip approached I told my wife we would leave the house early on Saturday morning to get to the ship as soon as possible. She agreed but when I got home from work on Friday night at 11:30pm she was surprise when I asked her whether she was ready to leave. She told me the ship hadn’t even arrived yet. Of course I was joking but continued on teasing her by saying it would be cool to get there before the ship arrived and then to see all the sad faces getting off as we were getting on.

Actually we slept at home on Friday night but I really couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned all night, looking at my glow in the dark watch. First it was 1:10. Then it was 2:15. Then it was 3:30. Then it was 5:05. Finally at 7:00 I woke up my wife and told her to get ready. I didn’t have to tell her a second time. In fact this was the fastest I had seen her move in a long time. And this was all for a one night cruise. What’s going to happen in three weeks when we take that week-long cruise?

We left the house at 10:00 and drove to the pier. We got there in about a half an hour and parked the car after we paid the $25.00 daily fee and had the car searched by bomb sniffing dogs.  We walked into the terminal, rolling our luggage, and were approached by a worker who wanted to know where we were going. I told him that we were taking the Norwegian Spirit one night cruise. He commented that we were early so I told him we wanted to get the vacation started early.  He proceeded to tell me to stay to the right of ropes and to go to the front of the seating area. The way this guy reacted I thought we were the first ones there but I could see there were about a hundred others who had beaten us to the pier.

At the front of the seating area we were met by an NCL representative who gave us a map of the ship. Since we had spent a total of 21 days on the ship we knew our way around. Before I knew it we were called for pre-booking. We presented one of the ladies there with our tickets, passports, and credit card and within a couple of minutes were handed our keycard and then told to help ourselves to the water, orange juice, pound cake slices and cookies that were offered by NCL before we took a seat.

We sat in the third row but the NCL representative told us that we would be allowed on the ship by row and the closest we sat toward the front, the faster we would be on the ship. When my wife heard that she wanted to sit in the first row but there were no seats available. She was upset but I told her that it would only be a matter of a minute or two between the first row getting on the ship and our third row getting on the ship. I then asked my wife if she wanted us to sit on the laps of the people in front of us. When I remarked that I could give the lady sitting in front of me a lap dance, that lady turned around and said that would be great although my wife didn’t think we were funny.

Most of the people who had beaten us to the pier had just come off the Carnival Victory ship that was also in port this day. That ship was repositioning to Norfolk, Virginia so it would be leaving with no passengers. There were also a couple of people who had just gotten off the Norwegian Spirit’s six day cruise to New England and Canada and were staying around for the one nighter.

At 11:15 we were told to finish our drinks and food because we would be going on the ship in five minutes. It wasn’t even five minutes later when we were asked to stand and then we were taken through the metal detectors and then to have our “Welcome Aboard” photo taken, which consisted of a green screen background.

We then had our hands sprayed with some antibiotic liquid by a rather large woman standing before the gangway and then we proceeded up the walkway. We were on the ship by 11:30 and I yelled to my wife, “Welcome Home” as we had our key card swiped.

Next up: What we did no the ship.

Lotteryfan-So happy to see your report here.  I remember reading all your other ones.  Can't wait for the next installment!

I finally was able to register on here.  Yeah!  Don't know what the problem was, but I couldn't get signed in.  Came here to hear Shoreguy's and the rest of all of your good advice.

Well, I am disappointed. Shoreguy gets a "sticky" and I get moved to another area of the message board that I didn't even know existed until now.

This is why I use the word, "diary" and not "review" as there will be more information as to what I did, along with several observations, rather than just mention the good and bad points like a "review" has.

I hope that despite this move, the usual number of people who read the NCL boards here will be able to find this thread once it hits the bottom of the page on the NCL section.

More to follow on my diary later today.

I am looking forward to reading the rest!

Keep on writing.  I love the Spirit and I am looking forward to going back on in August.  We have the Dawn 2-day in a couple of weeks to keep us until summer.

I was really amazed to be on the ship at 11:30. I knew that people were let on the ship as early as 12 noon but never at 11:30. I had set two goals for myself on this overnight trip. The first would be to eat as much as possible. I wanted to get my money’s worth and the only way I could do this was to eat it in food. My second goal would be to stay awake all night. This second goal was going to be difficult as I’m usually in bed by 9pm, having to get up for work at 4:30am.

We entered the ship on the middle of the seventh deck, just behind the Atrium. We were coaxed over to the elevators by one of the crew who mumbled something but I couldn’t make out what he was saying with his thick accent. I asked him to repeat himself and all I got out of his speech was something about the twelfth floor.  I figured he was pushing us to the Raffles buffet, and the pool area, but we wanted to go to Windows, which was further back of the ship on that deck. However, since Windows wouldn’t be opened for another half hour I figured we would hang out by the pool for a little while before heading back down to the seventh floor for Windows.

The wife and I were the first ones walking by the pool and I remarked to my wife that it was just like the time we spent on the ship between the two parts of our back to back cruise last April and May. At that time we were only two of 32 people on the ship who were doing a back to back. Everyone else had either gotten off the ship or was waiting to get on the ship.

Although it was sunny and very warm on this day, there was a net placed over the pool preventing anyone from jumping or climbing into the pool. I figured if they didn’t remove that net shortly, they would have a riot on their hands. Yes, it was the first week of October but the temperatures were expected to climb into the 80’s.

Just above and behind the pool deck on the twelfth floor was a bar with an eating and sitting area called the Bier Garten. My wife and I sat down at one of the tables there and watched as others made their way into the pool area just below us. Within five minutes six different drink hosts and hostesses came over and wanted to know whether we wanted a drink. We are not liquor drinkers so we took a pass with each one who came by. Waiting for the time to pass until 12:00, I couldn’t help but notice the smell and sounds of hamburgers cooking on the Bier Garten grill. When I suggested to my wife that we get a closer look at the food we just couldn’t resist grabbing a plate and filling it with a hamburger, a bun, French fries, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Then there were those famous pretzel-flavored rolls which also found their way onto our plates. Well, so much for Windows this afternoon.

By the time the seventh drink hostess came over, the wife and I each ordered a soda.

Within minutes the pool area was crowded as someone removed the netting that had been covering the pool. Dozens of people either jumped in or sat at the edge of the pool, with their feet wadding.

By 1pm several members of the band started to test their instruments and by 1:10 the party had officially started.

Having finished our lunch the wife and I decided to get a closer look at the band. There were many seats already taken by the pool side but there were about a dozen empty beach chairs behind the band so we decided to sit there. Eventually a middle-aged couple sat down next to us and after a couple of songs the woman got up to dance. However, this wasn’t just any dance as she did a lot of grabbing of her own, rather large, breasts and her crotch. I figured that she must have been drunk already and maybe thought that she was Michael Jackson. It was funny to watch it at first. Her husband even remarked that she had one to many Bahama-Mamas already and it was only about 1:30.

She next grabbed my wife’s hand and coaxed her to get up off the chair and dance with her. My wife, never wanting to turn down a dance, got up and danced with this lady. By the next song this lady grabbed my hand and coaxed me to get up and dance. I’m the complete opposite of my wife. While she loves to dance, sing karaoke, volunteer for everything and generally have fun, I just want to be left alone. Midway during the song somehow this woman and I bumped into each other, with her large breasts slamming into my back. Since I thought I may have accidentally bumped into her I apologized. However, it wasn’t more than five seconds later when she slammed her breasts into my back again and then did it a third time less than a second later. I looked at her husband in fear but he just laughed. By now, my wife saw what was going on and wanted to leave. I couldn’t blame her. Try explaining to the ship’s doctor how I got whiplash while dancing.

After this we took a walk into Raffles and decided to have some of the desserts they were offering. I had a bowl of vanilla ice cream, a bowl of chocolate ice cream, some jello, and three different pieces of cake. Remember I told you I wanted to get my money’s worth.

Just before 2:00 we decided to make our way to our inside cabin.

Coming Up: Cabin Description and the sailaway.

First of all the wife was there so even if I wanted to enjoy it I couldn't and second of all my wife was getting upset and I didn't want her to blame me for this.

In life I get blamed for a lot of things but I didn't want to take the hit for this.

The above post was posted by me but was posted under my wife’s name as she didn’t log out and I didn’t log back in. I apologize to anyone who was confused or if I violated any of the rules here. I certainly wouldn’t want to be the first person banned from CC and here.

Just after 2pm the wife and I entered our inside cabin. It was the first time we had ever stayed in an inside cabin, having stayed in a balcony cabin the previous two times on the Norwegian Spirit. Now normally my wife does not like to be in close places but she thought the room was kind of cute. I figured if she didn’t like being in the room we could always grab a nap in Galaxy of the Stars, or stay awake all night as planned.

The room couldn’t have been bigger than my bathroom at home and I was taken aback by the size. There were two separate beds, with each one on opposite walls which allowed for maybe three feet of space between the two beds. Since we were only going to be there for one night it wasn’t worth the effort to have the beds moved together.

The bathroom had a musty, damp smell and there were rust stains around the drain on the floor. I wondered when the last time bleach was poured down the drain as we usually do at work to prevent any mold or bacteria growth. Luckily we brought a can of Lysol spray with us.

On the little desk was a piece of paper entitled, “Your cruise…our stuff” and listed the prices of what we would be charged if anything was taken from the room upon our exit. I had never seen anything like this before either on this ship or any hotel. A glass cup would cost $5.00, a pillow would cost $20.00, the luggage mat would cost $25.00, the remote control would cost $35.00, the ice bucket would cost $45.00, towels ranged from $8.00 to $25.00 and on and on.

As of now there was no Freestyle Daily in the room to help us plan our evening.

We were only in the room for a few minutes to drop off our luggage before deciding to take a walk around the ship.

We spent a couple of minutes in the Atrium on the seventh floor and my wife noticed one of the cruise ship hosts, named Matt, standing by the Wii electronic game. She went over to him to inquire as to whether any of the people we knew were still on the ship. Unfortunately, Glen, and Scotty were gone. So was Vaughn and Q. However, Luz and Dave were still on the ship as well as George. Now these might just be names to you but to my wife, they represented names of people that she knew for a short time but who left us with a lifetime of memories.

We soon walked around the ship. We went to the photography station on the eighth floor to look for the picture that was taken of us just before we got onto the ship but we were too early as no one’s pictures were posted yet.

We next walked to the back of the ship on the seventh floor where the Stardust showroom was. We wanted to know what the show was that night although we had seen them all several times already. There was also a picture board of some of the big shot entertainment hosts including the cruise ship director, Julie, the assistant cruise ship director, Ray Ray and a picture of Luz and George. Everyone else who was pictured we didn’t recognize.

We then journeyed back to the twelfth floor for another visit to the band and pool area. As we approached the area behind the band where we had been earlier and where I had been attacked by that woman, I was hoping that they were gone and they were.

More details to follow tonight as I have to get to work…

I haven't finished reading yet, but I just had to say... TACKY, TACKY, TACKY. :nono: I certainly hope I don't see anything like this in my cabins in the future!!!

I haven't finished reading yet, but I just had to say... TACKY, TACKY, TACKY. :nono: I certainly hope I don't see anything like this in my cabins in the future!!!

Good grief.  I wonder what kind of people they're attracting on these one-nighters (other than our friends here).

I leaned against one of the pillars surrounding the area where the pool band was playing as my toes tapped to the beat of the music. Meanwhile my wife joined a group of women who were dancing closer to the pool area. Just then my wife recognized one of the cruise ship hosts that were hanging around the band. His name was George and his official title was “Pool Attendant”. My wife jumped up and down as she tried to get his attention and when he finally noticed her he came down from the stage and the two met just behind the band.

He admitted that she looked familiar but that he didn’t remember her name. Realistically, these cruise ship hosts see thousands of people every week and very few of us are remembered so I didn’t really believe that he remembered her.

We asked about some of the others that we had known but George had very information for us. These cruise ship hosts can stay on a ship everyday for six months and then take their leave. Sometimes they come back to the same ship and sometimes they go to other ships. And sometimes they do not come back at all either of their own doing or that of NCL.

After a few minutes of talking with George, he had to leave us to do a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket in case of an emergency. On longer trips it was mandatory to meet at your life boat station but on this one night trip a simple demonstration either around the pool area or on the television, or over the loud speaker would suffice. So many people were having fun around the pool that no one was really paying attention to George, or the announcement that Julie was presenting over the loud speaker.

After this, the wife and I decided to walk around some more before the sailaway party began in a few minutes. It was then that we met up with Ray-Ray, the assistant cruise director. Again my wife was very happy to see him as she hugged him. I joked that he probably didn’t even remember us but then he admitted that it’s difficult to remember everyone they see. He had told us that it was his last day on the ship as he was taking his leave. I remarked that it was good to know that Julie, the cruise ship director, was on the ship since we were unimpressed with Darrell, the other cruise ship director who is on when Julie is not. Ray-Ray said that this was Julie’s last day on the ship also before her leave.

After walking around a little more we went to the pool area for the sailaway party. By now, another band had taken the podium and it was called, “Fusion Wave.” We had seen them on one of our other Norwegian Spirit cruises. They did all the usual party songs like “The Electric Slide”, “Hot Hot Hot”, “YMCA”, “The Macarena”, and the “Gimme Dollar” song. Some of the other cruise ship hosts danced around the pool area and for the first time on this cruise we saw Julie. She had lost a lot of weight since we had seen her about a year and a half earlier and she looked good.

Within the hour we passed by the Statue of Liberty with the usual song of “God Bless The USA” played over the speakers. A short time after that we sailed under the Verrazano Bridge. Both sights always give me the goosebumps.

There was food galore by the pool including hamburgers, hot dogs, pork chops, baked potatoes, corn, and some salad. I again made a pig of myself. Remember I wanted to get my money’s worth.

The band played for about an hour and a half and as we headed out into the Atlantic Ocean it got windier and cooler. After a while we could not stay outdoors any longer as the sun went down so we walked over to the Galaxy of the Stars showroom. There was a six piece band, called the "Norwegian Spirit Band” playing some classical tunes. We stayed for a couple of songs as we really don’t enjoy this kind of music. However, we felt bad for the band as there were only about a half dozen people in the showroom.

After this we went back to our cabin and saw the Freestyle Daily on one of the beds. We then planned out the rest of our evening.

One of the things that I find very fascinating about the ship is something that they broadcast on the television. Every fifteen minutes a “Report From the Bridge” feature comes on one of the channels. This tells us how far we have traveled, how far we still have to travel, air temperature, wave heights, and the report features a map of where we are going and where we have been. On a typical journey to Florida and the Bahamas the ship might do about 2000 nautical miles. On our back to back trip in April and May the ship had traveled over 5000 nautical miles in the two weeks. On this one night cruise the ship was going to travel 160 nautical miles. The ship would run east, running parallel with Long Island before heading south and then back west to New York City.

Next up: The evening begins…

On the little desk was a piece of paper entitled, “Your cruise…our stuff” and listed the prices of what we would be charged if anything was taken from the room upon our exit. I had never seen anything like this before either on this ship or any hotel. A glass cup would cost $5.00, a pillow would cost $20.00, the luggage mat would cost $25.00, the remote control would cost $35.00, the ice bucket would cost $45.00, towels ranged from $8.00 to $25.00 and on and on.

You have to wonder just how much property they're losing to their guests who "just want a souvenir" to put something like this in the cabins. My guess, quite a bit!
